I'm thinking of ditching Ubuntu due to VARIOUS ISSUES of ABSURD PROPORTIONS that many of you WOULDN'T BELIEVE so I'll just be swift and ask which distro I should switch to.

I'll probably be dual-booting with an Illumos distro.

I've always liked Fedora which is kinda close to unbuntu in some ways but its based off red hat and not a debian.

Yeah, I thought of Fedora. I also thought of Linux Mint.

Illumos, for those unaware, is another kernel. I'd probably go for the OpenIndiana distro. Illumos is a continuation of the OS/Net Consolidation (OpenSolaris kernel) and OpenIndiana is the userland running over Illumos.

I do not like Fedora. I do not like using the #yum command. My favourite distro so far has been Linux Mint although Ubuntu is really nice and stable... very hard to screw it up. I'd actually be interested in hearing how you screwed yours up lol. (Did you add the Enlightenment nightly build rep?) 😛

Linux Mint is just very clean, precise and easy to use. Other than Mint and Ubuntu, I like openSUSE, but I have never gotten used to using yum or zypper... I really like the apt commands therefore I stick to distros using them.

It really depends on what you're going for. If you want to cusomize the hell out of your desktop then you want to look for something using a KDE desktop.

I highly reccommend looking here: http://distrowatch.com

I honestly would like to hear the problems you are having.. I think others should too. I say this because ubuntu is always praised a linux for human beings.. Or something that just works...

Anyways if you would like to continue using Linux, I would suggest OpenSuse. It is a pretty stable distribution, easy to use, and the community is pretty nice. Its what I personally use aswell along with windows 7.

There is also PClinuxOS which is another nice distribution. My only problem with it is the community. It is full of uptight aholes..

Word on the uptight a holes part. I would also like to add Mageia is one of the distros full of customization options and is relatively stable from my experience. I dual boot Windows 7, Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Ubuntu Server, openSUSE, and Mageia.

Personally I run Ubuntu Server the most due to checking up on my mail server. It is generally frowned upon to have a server on your primary desktop computer, but I have enough hard disk space as well as RAM to make it possible and it runs very smoothly.

As well as having the core Ubuntu Server I installed Ubuntu Desktop using the command "apt-get install --no--install-reccommends ubuntu-desktop", therefore I can use the server within a nice GUI without the "shiny" components Ubuntu offerns that are unecessary to run a server.

(I also installed Webmin and it is gold for managing a LAMP server)

I know all of the major distros. Lol.

Yeah, I'm just looking for advice on which one I should get for stability.

And I currently cannot open a program through the "Dash Home" area. I have previously had issues with screen resolution, NTP (Network Time Protocol), Git (Broken package), BIND (Broken package), and a few other broken packages.

Also, while a couple of the broken packages go back to Ubuntu 10.10/11.04, most issues started recently with the upgrade to 12.04.

Ouch. I will probably be the only guy who recommends Arch. Unfortunately, they removed the AIF - so you will need to read a lot of documentation before you can get anything done.

Never heard of an issue with NTP. Although, there are issues with certain drivers on "every" distro. If you are working an nVidia driver, chances are a 1327x768 is the best resolution you are going to get.

As far as the packages, did you ever try dpkg-reconfigure [package-name] ?

Yes. And Ubuntu Software Center said that they were up-to-date.

Now Terminal cannot open, however. I can't use it any more. And 1327x768 is way higher than my resolution...

But yeah, any recommended distros? I think I'll try Mint or Mageia first. But, as I said, I'll also try OpenIndiana to see if it has Linux 32-bit support like FreeBSD. If it does, I'll use it, most definitely.

You should defiantly try OpenSuse if you looking for a stable distribution.

try bodhi linux, its an ubuntu fork as far as i know. and it works on old computers
