I am planning on making a social network like Facebook even though with a lot of changes
The website will be normally made from scratch
The problem is that how do I make it to the public without spending money?
Is it easy and worth to make it?

Simple answer. Not worth it, don't do it. The only way a new social network would work is if you had a new concept, a new twist. If you thought a new idea for a social network, you wouldn't be asking if to start one or not.

Reasonable answer, but what I am really asking is that if a new social network is out does it tremendously need marketing?
Is marketing what makes the social network work?
I have seen better than Facebook and they don't work :/

Yes. You need to invest money for a social network to gain traction. Without spending money it will more than likely fail.

ok so basically what could be a sum which will make it NOT FAIL if the idea is better than other social networks or new

$x,xxx - $xx,xxx would be a suitable amount to launch an effective campaign for a social network. You would need a LOT more than this in the future though.

You'd be better off focusing on some niche aspect of social networking than trying to re-invent the wheel and do essentially what Facebook already does well enough. To be a real competitor, we're talking millions of dollars -- that is, unless your system is just leaps and bounds better than everything else available.

I'm making a new social network and trust me, it's going to cost a lot.

My budget is $200,000 towards marketing and getting those initial members and $146,016 for just one server for the year. That's a server with 512GB of RAM, Octo Core Xeon 2.70Ghz processor, 96TB of storage and 20,000GB of bandwidth. That's just one server, Facebook has hundreds of thousands.

It's going to cost quite a bit and that's only the start of it. This is a two year project, with the site going live sometime next year and I will be getting in contact with investors to get that initial $346,016 which I'm currently predicting will be needed. One of my features though will be making a big return, so I believe I could get a few people interested and see if I can push that number a little higher to suit my requirements. Assuming my marketing goes well, my expected growth is $3,153,600 in the first year, which is a figure investors would love to hear.

So it looks like $346,016 will be my first year at the minimum.

Geez man. These things do cost quite a bit, but they don't have to be so expensive unless you have monies to throw around. 😛

I'd say on average a young entrepreneur needs around $1,000-$10,000 for their initial web start up. With that said, many successful projects have started with just around $300-$500. And we should note that many of those that have reached the $10,000 range needed to build physical components (such as an offline gadget) in addition to their website.

Thus, there's no need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to start a social network. It'll be interesting to see where you'll get your investors from, since social networking isn't a hot spot for investors. The trend seems to be shifting towards the convergence of personal well-being/heatlh with the web.

In short, there's no need to spend so much money for starting a website. It'll be expensive but not that expensive.

My figure is high because I want it to be, my opening budget makes up about 66 percent of that, which doesn't even include the servers.

We have a lot of companies here in New Zealand who are driving to get New Zealanders up and running. My friend has his own project and got $50,000 from one company just to get old computers, refresh them a bit and sell them to disadvantaged schools. Our government also backs things like this too.

You would be surprised how much money it takes to get things up and running, lawyers to pay, advertising, servers and promotions - it begins to add up quite quickly 😛

Yeah I know, those are called angels if am not mistaken.
The prob is that here might be some but I would run into trouble, since I don't exactly know what happens later.

@fords
I am not looking to spend time on a project without money for the moment since I really need money
Anyway, thanks for the offer 🙂

Like Chucky said, you would need to invest a lot of money in doing a new social network project.. Not a one man job. 😉

Congratulation GSquadron, that would be great. I just want to encourage you that carry on and try hard, Hope you'll be successful to your mission soon.

Yeah Google had this when they launched their social network. Yes it's popular but not a dent on Facebook. You need a big idea like Twitter had.

You can spend as much money as you want if you have enough to throw around. 😛 But I was just trying to tell the OP that it doesn't have to be so expensive. The thing is, especially in the web world, the idea and techniques count more than the initial investment.

There are a lot of Social Networking sites that are top off the charts right now. I'm not bursting your bubble man but competing against these websites won't help you. Consider the millions or BILLIONS of users just from Facebook and Twitter. So I suggest do another thing like online marketing or your chosen business and never compete with Social Networking again. Haha. Sorry, not threatening here bro. 🙂

I created a social network using a paid software known as PhpFox. It is now the largest weather-related social network online. I recommend it if you have a niche to create it around but if you want to compete with something like Facebook or Twitter, you are going to have a VERY LONG road a head of you. If can be done... It really can... but can you devote the required time, energy and income towards getting it done?

If you have enough time to spend online, you could substitute it for spending money.
Mind you, it i not easy cos nothing good comes easy...it really worth!

To launch such a site demands money and something new must be introduced to the online world. You should introduced such features that other social networks do not have.

@luke
One question: Did you create it from scratch or with some platform?
