As it happened: Missing New Zealand children found after fugitive dad shot dead by police

Tom Phillips had been on the run with his three children for nearly four years.

This was all over global news for a long time because he took his kids into the woods for about four years and the New Zealand police couldn't find him.

Some stuff happened today and he got shot and died.

They're still looking for two of the kids.

Very sad situation for everyone involved.

It's going to be a very very cold night where the kids are hiding so they've only got a few more hours to find them. Anyone would think the police would get the army in to help.

Police have confirmed the two children who had been missing with fugitive father Tom Phillips have been found.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Jill Rogers said "I can tell you with great relief this evening that soon after 430 today, we've located Tom Phillips remaining children."

Should be. It is a very complicated situation. One of the kids was part of the burglary so I'm not sure what will happen with them. That was the oldest kid.

I imagine the children will have to undergo a period of assessment and rehabilitation before being returned to their mother but I doubt that will involve criminal charges as the eldest child was only 12.

I'm glad the children were found alive! I can't imagine what they had to endure out there for years.

I had to post this as a rant on Facebook:

People on social media are literally knighting Tom.Phillips as a hero. He shot a cop! What about the grandparents that missed important memories of their grandchildren because he was selfish? Birthdays, Christmas etc?

Not only that but there are some people that are happy because he shot a cop! 🤷

"The police aren't heroes" I'm sure people will say something different if they were held at gunpoint!
