First Impressions
As I first started going through your site, I noticed a nice, clean looking magazine theme for your blog, but not in the same design as some more popular news websites. Seems nice and clean, and from what I can tell, it is showing the latest new articles, with 5 featured articles at the top, atleast I hope that that slider at the top is supposed to work also for featured articles, instead of the recent 5 new articles. I will cover this a little bit more in the site structure.
Also, what irks me with the first time visit, is the occasional article that doesn't have an image. If you are going to have a decent experience on the homepage, that is probably one of the things you need to try to work on better for first time viewers, since people expect an image that relates to the article.
Next for the initial thought of the colors, it has a pretty good combination for it, not too strong on the white, while not being overly bearing with the black either.
Also for first time viewers, it seems as if there is no about page to tell me what the site focuses on in terms of news, so I would have no idea of knowing the basics of your site, without actually digging through everything, and seeing what you have on it.

Business Aspects
Business wise, I see allot of ads plastered all over the articles, and an ad in the sidebar when you go to the categories listed in the menu bar. I know you cannot control some of the ads you get from the news websites that provides you the articles, but it could help if you tried better placement of your own ads that are inside of the articles. Also be mindful that you can only have a maximum of 3 regular ads on each page. So you need to pay attention to that on reorganizing where the ads show up.
A suggestion for the ads, is that you get one good square ad at the top of the article, aligned to the right side of the article, and an ad placed somewhere in the middle, or near the bottom of each article, in addition to the ad in the footer.

Site Structure
Your site structure is good for your need at the moment, but it could be better organized if you go after paid newspaper or magazine style themes. Depending on how you want to set it up in the future, depends on the type of magazine theme you would need. I recommend going over to a place like Theme Forest and taking a look through their WordPress Magazine Themes, and bookmark a few of them that you like, that you could potentially use in the future. One I would suggest right off the bat to help you out, is the
Soledad Magazine Theme, since it has a dozen or more layouts you can choose from, just within the theme itself.
While you are using your current theme, I suggest you have in the featured article section, articles that you want to have a focus on for your viewers day by day. Find several important news articles, and add them to that section, that way you can drive traffic to the most important news stories that happen, so that no one misses out on the things that they need to know the most about.
Also, I recommend again to try to keep the news articles up to date, with appropriate images as they are posted. This is important for keeping up with the appearance of your site being professional, and up to date.
Overall, I like the design, but it needs to be updated in the future, to something more along the lines of a better magazine theme, that helps identify your site as a news site.

Final Remarks
If you keep up the work, and try your best to provide a good experience for your visitors, I can see your site becoming one of the places to go to for news. Try some of my suggestions above, and you will do better. 🙂
