I started this a year ago on a hockey forum I mod, so I decided to bring it here. Important trades and rumors will be posted.

Sources tell TSN a deal is in place for forward Alexei Ponikarovsky to be traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins for prospect Luca Caputi but at this point, Pittsburgh first has to move a contract for salary cap reasons.

Sources say the deal may be completed tonight.

Ponikarovsky will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and is earning $2.5 million this year. The 29-year old native of Kiev, Ukraine, has 19 goals and 22 assists in 61 games this season and is on pace to eclipse his career-high 23 goals set in 2008-09.

Drafted by the Maple Leafs in the 4th round (87th overall) in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Ponikarovsky has 114 goals, 143 assists and a plus-56 rating in 477 games with the blue and white.

Caputi, 21, is a Toronto native and was drafted by the Penguins in the fourth round of the 2007 draft. He has one goal and one assist in four games with Pittsburgh this season.

Details to follow.

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Panthers have made the first deal after the NHL's Olympic-break roster freeze was lifted at midnight Monday.

Pittsburgh acquired defenceman Jordan Leopold from Florida for a second-round pick in this year's draft, Penguins GM Ray Shero announced.

Leopold, 29, is eligible to become a free agent at season's end. That made him an attractive option to be moved before Wednesday's 3 p.m. ET deadline for NHL teams to complete deals.

The Panthers' chances of making the playoffs appear dim as they're six points out of a post-season spot with 21 games remaining in the regular season. Pittsburgh, the defending Stanley Cup champion, is battling with New Jersey for top spot in the Atlantic Division.

Leopold has 18 points (seven goals) in 61 games this season and ranked second for the Panthers in average ice time at 22:25.

Florida acquired him last June in a trade that sent Jay Bouwmeester to Calgary.

Leafs need a forward, that's all they need.
But with Burke as GM, that isn't gonna happen.

The deal is upped to Skoula and Caputi. Both teams agree, it's finalized after a trade call to the NHL.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have a deal in place to trade forward Alexei Ponikarovsky to the Pittsburgh Penguins for defenceman Martin Skoula and prospect Luca Caputi.

The deal will become final after a trade call with the NHL.

Ponikarovsky was kept out of the line-up as a healthy scratch for Toronto's home game against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Skoula, 30, has three goals and five assists in 33 games for the Penguins this season. The veteran blueliner will be joining his fifth NHL club after being drafted in the first round (17th overall) by the Colorado Avalanche in the 1998 draft. He also skated for Anaheim, Dallas, and Minnesota before signing with the Penguins as an unrestricted free agent last summer.

Caputi, 21, is a Toronto native and was drafted by the Penguins in the fourth round of the 2007 draft. He has one goal and one assist in four games with Pittsburgh this season. The 6'2", 184 pound left winger has 23 goals and 24 assists in 54 games for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL.

The NHL trade deadline has passed, and the Oilers have traded Lubomir Visnovsky to the Ducks for Ryan Whitney. The Capitals had a busy day, acquiring Milan Jurcina, Joe Corvo, Eric Belanger and Scott Walker. Here's a summary of the trades made on Wednesday:

- Carolina traded Aaron Ward to Anaheim for goaltender Justin Pogge and a fourth-round draft pick.

- Carolina traded Scott Walker to Washington for seventh-round pick.

- Vancouver traded Pierre-Cedric Labrie to the St. Louis Blues for Yan Stastny.

- Colorado traded Wojtek Wolski to Phoenix for Peter Mueller and Kevin Porter.

- Detroit traded Kris Newbury to the New York Rangers for Jordan Owens (minor league trade).

- Pittsburgh trades Chris Peluso to Toronto for sixth round draft pick.

- Edmonton trades Steve Staios to Calgary for Aaron Johnson and a third round pick.

- Hurricanes trade Stephane Yelle and Harrison Reed to Colorado for Cedric Lalonde-McNicoll and a sixth-round pick.

Martin Skoula's time in Toronto was basically non-existent. Toronto had acquired Skoula as part of the Alexei Ponikarovsky with Pittsburgh on Tuesday night but was unloaded today to the Devils.

Prior to the Olympic break, during which the NHL froze all trade activity, a couple of big deals were made. The New Jersey Devils made a big splash, acquiring sniper Ilya Kovalchuk, Anssi Salmela and a second round pick from the Atlanta Thrashers for John Oduya, Niclas Bergfors, Patrice Cormier, plus first and second round draft picks.

The Canadian teams have also been active this year.

The Flames and Maple Leafs shook things up with a major exchange on January 31. Toronto got Dion Phaneuf, Keith Aulie and Fredrik Sjostrom for Ian White, Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman and Jamal Mayers.

Toronto then flipped Vesa Toskala and Jason Blake to Anaheim in return for Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Toskala has since been sent to Calgary.

Flames GM Darryl Sutter also got Ales Kotalik and Christopher Higgins from the Rangers in exchange for Olli Jokinen and Brandon Prust.

Steve Tambellini, the GM of the last-place Edmonton Oilers, sent Denis Grebeshkov to Nashville for a second round pick.

On Tuesday, Ottawa Senators GM Bryan Murray traded a second round pick to the Islanders for veteran defenceman Andy Sutton in an effort to shore up the Senators blue line. Earlier, he acquired Matt Cullen from Carolina to get more scoring.

Montreal GM Pierre Gauthier has made two deals since taking over the Canadiens from Bob Gainey on February 9, first acquiring Dominic Moore from Florida for a second rounder in 2011, and on Tuesday sending Matt D'Agostini to St. Louis for prospect Aaron Palushaj.

Vancouver GM Mike Gillis has been quiet this season. He has made one trade, and that came in the summer when the Canucks received Christian Ehrhoff and Brad Lukowich from San Jose for Daniel Rahimi and Patrick White.
