Well, after watching the movie about Steve Jobs, founder of Apple - I see he was about loyalty to the vision, not being a nice guy. However, though, he wasn't all about profits either.

Anyway, do you feel there's such a thing as being "too nice a boss" - or, on the other hand, can obsession with producing drive away employees?

Well, I think there can be a balance with the "mean guy" thing being slightly in the lead. 😀

Being nice is like a disability these days. Learn to be rude if you want to survive.

A balance is definitely needed. Most times I'm too easy going to be a really good businessman and people take advantage of that niceness.

A creative person can never be a good businessman. It is like day and night, they cannot co-exist.

Honestly, I would rather have a nice guy as a boss, than some jerk who is on a power trip, and doesn't understand people and what drives their business to get profit.

Well, this is sort of a misunderstanding of human nature on some people. I mean, some employees are simply lousy - so how can that be tolerated? Well, they can be fired - but the more humane thing can be to simply yell at them - but that would seem like bullying to some.
