Notes:

Board Software Usage History:
March 2004 to December 2004: AcmlmBoard 1.8a
December 2004 to 2007: AcmlmBoard 1.92
2007 to January 2009: AcmlmBoard 1.A2
January 2009 to present: phpBB3 (In order to find a medium to attract more activity)

History: I created my board on March 11th, 2004. Almost right away, I started receiving members. I created NFF so that people can have a peaceful board to post on and have fun. Within nine months, NFF accumulated more than 12,000 posts and over 100 members.

When the public release of AB1.A2 was released, I took the opportunity to upgrade my board since I believed the board would perform better. Little did I know that doing that would start a slow degradation of board activity. During the entire 5 years (March 11th anniversary) that NFF has been opened, I have never advertised (with the exception of a thread on one other board), or spammed needlessly on ANY board. I believe the total amount of people I have PM'd on any board is less than 10, so about 90% of the user base on NFF have been word-of-mouth from other people that have already registered on the board. So now I'm going around advertising to grab more members.

Records: NFF has had its share of records over the last 5 years in its existence. Two years ago, NFF had a massive posting spree day and accumulated 650+ posts in a 24-hour period. And as of yet, NFF has still has to pass the record of 10 users online at once. I am hoping to do that soon. I’m all for making new records.

Activity: Over the past 2 years, NFF has suffered a steady degradation in activity, and over the past 3 months, activity has been less than 50 posts the entire month. Zeros are now common and sometimes no one visits in a 24-hour period. NFF has accumulated more than 27,000 posts, but taken almost 3 years to accumulate 15,000 of those posts. I'm hoping that I can bring NFF back from the dead and get more activity. Note: I realize that getting the activity back to the way it was back in 2004 is too much to ask for, but getting 15 to 20 average per day should be an easily attainable goal. I am willing to go back to the old board that I was using if it's more comfortable for people to post in. (I still have the old archive which is only 7 weeks old.)

Conclusion: As the owner of NFF, I’m hoping to bring back activity to the board, even if only a little -- and also to fully understand what went wrong that NFF has hit just about rock bottom.

Re: Nihongo Freak Forums

Nobody wants to give this a shot? I don't think anyone came into this thread but me.

Re: Nihongo Freak Forums

A good post there mate, well done.

If you make some more posts around the advertise your forum section the admins and team leaders may get you a look here attribute, which would be helpful 🙂

Re: Nihongo Freak Forums

Thank you, I'm hoping to get more activity to my forum soon. I'm working on getting all 4 themes on the board accessing all the available features.

There are now 16 games in the arcade that you can play. I will add 4 more today or tomorrow to make a total of 20.

Re: Nihongo Freak Forums

I see most of the threads in this forum have back-to-back posts from the owners themselves. How do people actually get activity on their forums if people don't even look in the threads themselves?

Re: Nihongo Freak Forums

Haha wow, I can actually put anything in here and nobody would even notice. My forum may not be active, but I'm always there and answering questions at a moment's notice -- not many people can say that.

Re: Nihongo Freak Forums

Come and give this new system a chance -- you will have fun and be part of a community. 🙂

Re: Nihongo Freak Forums

You are using a very unknown forum software there and for a few reasons. The skin is very untidy with small writing and very close together sections. I can't say that blue is very easy on the eyes either, however, the posting bar at the top is a nice feature. I hope you are able to get some active members and if you can, just make a few little changes to make it more...user friendly 🙂

Re: Nihongo Freak Forums

Thank you for your reply Cloverfield. If I may, I would like to respond to those comments. 🙂

(1) Actually, the software is not as unknown as you think. Look at these websites if you don't mind:
http://jul.rustedlogic.net/index.php = Has more than 117,000 posts and 7.5 million views
http://xeogaming.org/index.php = Has more than 103,000 posts and 8.7 million views

This software has been in use since the late 90s. As the software got cleaned up over the years, it was very easy and fun to post in. It is the ONLY board software that uses an RPG posting system already installed. When I first acquired the software in 2004, a lot of other people wanted to use the software as well. Schemes are SO much easier to install than phpBB -- you don't need to "purge the cache" or whatever to make it work. It's a simple as adding the images and one php file to the schemes directory. I have 25 schemes that are being used right now.

(2) The size of the font has been fixed.

(3) I'm a little unclear on what you mean by "very close together sections." The menu at the top is very clear cut I think. The more features a board has, the more room on the main page you will use. However, the message on the page when you are not logged in could be trimmed a bit. When you register/sign in, you have the option to view the index page normally or with advanced stats and separated tables.

(4) I'm very open to suggestions on what kind of other changes that need to be made to the forum. Perhaps some posting on the forums will help you see what other changes need to be made.

I just restarted my board nine days ago, so there aren't that many posts yet. Come on over and join. 🙂

Re: Nihongo Freak Forums

Well, I'm going to try this again and see what happens, I actually forgot about this place for awhile -- I am open to suggestions on board improvement at any time. I know there haven't been any posts in awhile, but I won't restart the forum again -- I've done that too many times. I will, however, be making frequent little updates here and there. The board isn't going anywhere, it's viewable at anytime.

Re: Nihongo Freak Forums

Well, at least I got 2 more views to this thread since I've made the last post. 🙂 Maybe I should make a word of the day in here. Here's the first one:

FUYU
This is the character for "winter." Appropriate since it is almost winter now.

I'll have another word tomorrow.

Re: Nihongo Freak Forums

Having lived in Japan and studied Japanese, I would be interested in this type of forum. However, I have to agree with the earlier poster that the look of the forum isn't very professional, and the blue is really hard on the eyes. And actually, SMF and vBulletin have the features you listed earlier (shop/rpg/etc), but are much easier to update, although SMF is free and vB is not. I think converting to something more updated, then making your skin more professional might help you a lot as far as appealing to new members.

Re: Nihongo Freak Forums

First of all, thank you for responding to my posts. I would like to make some corrections/statements however: 🙂

(1) Actually, SMF and vB do NOT have features like RPG and shops already installed. They are MODs added later. The forum system I use already has RPG features -- although a shop was added later. Also, there is NO other forum system that uses custom post layouts. If there is, it's a MOD added later, and I haven't seen any. Acquiring RPG and shops MODs from other members is not always an easy task.

(2) I agree that I should change the default theme to something else. I will work on that. However, it is because of the theme that doesn't look professional, or because of the way the links/forums are laid out?

(3) I'd rather not use a forum system that you have to pay for. I've attempted to use phpBB3, but features that I add installed on the board were updated rarely, so I went back to my old software.

(4) Besides, why would I use something that everyone else is using -- isn't it better to be unique? 😉

Again, thanks for the input. 🙂
