OK, so not too long ago, my Nintendo 3DS XL decided to bite the dust on me, covering came off on one of the hinges and as of now it's only being held on by the other hinge. I've been playing my DS Lite for a while now but I would love to replace my 3DS, although I have a gut feeling the warranty is probably past expired, as I got the 3DS XL in february of 2014. It's now February of 2016 so my allotted two years are up. I'm dying to get a Nintendo 2DS, because I was anything but impressed with the 3DS function on my XL. The graphics look like anything but 3D. All they look like is a migraine waiting to happen.

So, here's what I'm wondering:

Can you play 3DS games on a 2DS system (I think you can but can't remember for sure)

Also, there isn't a collapsable thing on the 2DS is there, like when you close the console up.... kind of like the Game Boy Color and the original Game Boy Advance is what I'm thinking of in terms of examples.

I'm pretty sure you're right on both being able to play 3DS games on a 2DS and the lack of a henge. I don't own one myself, as I prefer the 3DS XL.

Sorry to hear that your old 3DS XL crapped out on you! I don't think the 2DS is really any better, just an alternative, so I'd get either a 3DS XL or 2DS, whichever fits your tastes better.

I'm still seriously considering the 2DS, as it doesn't have the flip up thingy, and there's no screwing around with 3D images and crud like that. I wasn't impressed with the 3DS XL anyway. If you had the 3D images switched on, it didn't even resemble 3D, it mostly looked like a bunch of blurry, fast-moving whatever you want a call them. Again, not impressed anyway and yeah.

I bought the 2DS because I'm a cheap bastard and because I didn't need the 3D, currently play Majora's Mask, Pokemon: Omega Ruby, Monster Hunters 4, and Super Mario World 2, and I absolutely love it all. Nintendo Store is pretty awesome with lots of older games too surprisingly, and they have this feature where you keep it on standby, as well as if you walk by someone else with a standby DS sometimes you can discover new apps! Pretty sweet imo, I love it.

I don't think the 3DS 3D works on everyone unfortunately. It never worked for me either, so I just keep it switched off. I've seen 3D before in movie theaters, but apparently the 3DS kind just doesn't work for me.

I would recommend the New 3DS over the 2DS. Since they are releasing new 3DS games that require the New 3DS. Since the New 3DS has a better CPU than the previous devices.

The 2DS is more of a gimmik than anything else.

Oh! I wasn't aware that they released an updated 3DS. Is the new 3DS XL worth upgrading from the old 3DS XL?

Yes if you want to play games that are locked to New 3DS, yes. Some games are locked to the New 3DS only and can't be played on older 3DS / 2DS systems. Due to the new hardware in the New 3DS. (Better CPU as I mentioned before)

Are there very many good games that are only for the new 3DS? Does the improved hardware improve the experience of playing existing 3DS games by a noticeable amount?

I personally don't own a new 3DS (at least not yet). I plan to get one though. I still have a normal 3DS and XL 3DS (both in good condition). Either way I have heard good things about the New 3DS. Better 3D quality, quicker performance for actions, etc.

I'm pretty sure that you can play 2DS games on a 3DS, they just won't be in 3D. So, it may be possible to play the 3DS games on a 2DS, you just won't be able to view them in 3D.

So I think it would be up to you if you decide to stick with the 3DS or go with a 2DS.

I'm pretty sure that there's no difference between 2DS/3DS games. The current generation of Nintendo mobile games are all branded "3DS," and can run on a 3DS, 3DSXL, 2DS, and new 3DS. They're all on the same shelf, have the same branding, etc. There may be a few exceptions where one game only supports a particular device, but that's kind of like how some Android apps only run on a Motorola phone for whatever reason.

It's overall up to you @Penquinn, but I will say though I personally don't see the point of stepping backwards and getting a 2DS. Always good to move forward and get the latest hardware if you can afford it.

New 3DS can play all the older DS / 3DS games including the ones that are built for New 3DS such as the newer Monster Hunter.

The part I bolded is my point. I don't have that kind of money to spend and was lucky to afford the original 3DS XL at all, really. That's why I'm looking to downgrade as I'm hoping it'll be a bit cheaper... not cheaper to the point where it would be a piece of crap, obviously, but cheaper in the way where you can pay good money and still get what you pay for.

As for the online stuff... Very rarely did I use the online function on the 3DS XL. I used it briefly for like running my forums and such, and when I got Pokemon X, and Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, I spent quite a bit of time screwing around in the Wonder Trade, but the online features seemed to eat my battery life it seems like, so I am not messing with that at all this time around. Besides, I went through how many years of gaming without all the wi-fi crap? Why start now? I'm too used to NOT having the internet stuff to worry about all of that crap now.

Well as for not being able to afford it. If you can afford a 2DS you can afford a 3DS. That logic may seem off, but it is actually true. If you can save up the money for a 2DS why not save a bit more to get a 3DS? There is a good saying of you get what you pay for. When it comes to technology it has always proven 95.99% of the time going the cheap route is never worth it. Just because it seems like a good deal it doesn't mean it actually is things that are cheap are cheap for a reason.
