No Rules?

Does a forum without rules usually work well because I don't think that it could, but it would be easy to get rid of the rules. :lol:

Anyone ever tried?

I always had rules whenever I created a forum. Having no rules could cause major problems with the forum in general and the members well...if they are not matured enough in my mind it will defently lure guest and possibly newcomers away because with no rules it could cause flaming, no repect, spam and so on. So when newcomers come onto your forum they possibly will click the X button at the top right hand corner of there screen.

If I had come to a forum that had no rules and I saw what I mentioned just above I would defiantly clicked the X button. No one I mean no one would want to see a forum like that if I did I would probably say to myself get some rules or face the consequences of a forum death.

Every forum/site needs rules, impossible without them. Even 4chan has a rule of no CP and no raids, if just for legal reasons.

Exactly! If every forum that was ever created on the Internet did not have rules, think of what the chaos would be like for the poor administrators who would have to spend day after day on their forums looking at nasty posts, swearing, things like that. Forums NEED rules, or else it wouldn't be able to function like they would.

You need rules because of laws, you can't have been posting porn/other illegal content - warez, libel, etc.

Seriously, if you want to bring order to your forum and make it successful, it's always wise to draft up a few short rules for members to abide by. That way, they'll get an idea of how to behave, and will hopefully do so.

I think it would be fun to test... maybe someone sets up a forum with very few rules and we see how it does? "No Rules" is impossible without major lawsuits within a few days, but if you made basic rules I think it could do extremely well.

Which is why they have flamewarforum.

If you don't remove illegal content then your board would break laws. Also most web-hosts and forum-hosts have their own content guidelines which you must follow. As long as you respect those two restrictions then your board would not be shut down but still many members who don't want to be flamed would simply not join.
