Let me share this sad experience that happened to our home desktop. Last month, the system disk of our home desktop started emitting a loud noise. But since it was working all right, we ignored. However, after a week, we noticed that the desktop was getting slower. The usual booting of 1 minute takes 2 minutes and last week it takes 5 minutes to boot. And several days ago, the disk crashed, cannot be accessed anymore.

dead drive, Time to replace it. I also keep check and when it's about to go or see something that's not right I start backing up files

Do you have backups of your files and system? 😱

Fortunately, SSDs are more affordable than they were in the past. xD Though, I'd still go with an HDD to save a few bucks if the system is older.

Yes, we have a backup but not very complete. In other words, we lost some files although they can be created again with a little work. We actually have 2 portable HDD for backup but the problem is the actual backing up which we sometimes forget. Anywa, we have been looking at the SSD since last year but until now we still have to hear of reviews on actual experience. I guess SSD will be cheaper now and perhaps we can try it when we have a budget.

Cheaper !== Better

HDD's might be cheap storage, but they're risky storage, I'd rather pay $10 extra now than lose $100 later.

Have you considered a solution like Dropbox or Google Drive?

We have both the Google Drive and Dropbox installed in our home desktop. Unfortunately, it was not working anymore since January of this year. As I had posted in another thread, those cloud storage facilities have no more support for computers running on Windows XP. I wonder why they have to make it obsolete for Windows XP.

Why not update to Windows 7 then? Windows XP no longer recieves updates from Microsoft, so other software vendors aren't going to support it either.

It seems that your Hardisk got some problem. and it is not repairable, do you backup your files? try to buy some new like SSD drives, it will run your Operating system smooth and long life.

We are starting to see 500GB or higher SSD but the more you go up the cost goes up

Storage is expensive. I'm setting up a storage server at my home soon with a lot of SSDs. Hoping to get about 15Tb of capacity accessible via LAN and through a VPN to my home network (my home internet speed is 2Gbit/second with 15ms ping so it's fast enough to do it quickly enough over the internet). Rip my wallet though.

darn it will,
Network storage is awesome, I'm planning to basically have an internal network/youtube with all of my favorite movies, videos, etc accessible from a web interface with the server in my bedroom. I like managing servers and coding stuff so fun little project for me. 15Tb of SSD Storage, to put that in reference 1TB SSDs cost between $300 and $700 depending on the drive, person who made it, and other factors. Let's pretend we are getting storage at lowest cost I can get the storage for about $5,000 then it's a matter of getting a server with enough slots for the SSDs, I think another $5,000 could cover it. I might just add in storage as I need it. At a bare minimum I'll need 2Tb to get started.

buy an car for that 😛 Yeah it does add up allot, Most projects do add allot
That's true but due to health issues it's unsafe for me to drive (dat uber and carpooling life though) so I spend money I'd spend on a car on other things 🙂
