The most recognizable and most used domain names are probably .com, .net & .org

  • Do you use a .com, .net or .org domain name for your forum? If so, why did you pick that?
  • Do you use a different one? Why did you pick that extension?

Do you think the domain extension really matters?

I think by default, people think of the .com for a website/forum, so chances are they will type in the .com, so having something other than that may lead them to another site instead of yours, which is not beneficial.

I also have a ccTLD (vanquish.me), but that's because it's a one word domain 😉 Also, some ccTLD's can create domain hacks, such as the old "del.icio.us", which can equally help people remember.

I have cyberguards.in which is a CCTLD. Its simply because the .com, .net and .org extensions are already registered for it and because i was an Indian.

Personally i believe a .com domain is best. Because if your site is example.com, people will just remember the word "example". But if it was other extension, they should remember the extension too.

I use a .com. Simply put, it's the most recognisable out of any of the other's. However if I was running a website for Irish people, I'd probably use a .ie, and maybe a .co.uk for people in Northern Ireland.

I use .co.uk, I picked it for a few reasons, it was cheaper than others, .com was taken (do a google search, you'll see what took it :lol🙂 also I'm british anyway so .co.uk was the perfect extension really.

I use a .org for my site which describes it, a non profit organization, and for a site to be really really successful it needs a TLD.

.it is still like a TLD, im talking about sub domains, free subdomains like co.cc or redirects like .tk or .co.nr, with those you will never be a real successful website.

Oh yeah well it depends, if you have those domains then it's not like you can't have a good website, but yeah sub-domains are bad, people should avoid using them.

Do you to find that people think your forum is for people from the UK?

I really dont join websites with country domains because it makes it for just one country... like www.thehazey.co.uk is a good forum, but the domain is the reason for me not being active there or I would.

You shouldn't let a TLD like that put you off, if it's easy to spell and type in it shouldn't be an issue, focus on the content rather than the domain.

I use a .info because I feel like using it. 🙂

@Kaiser., a .it is a ccTLD (country code TLD: specific for a country and managed by the country), likewise with .tk, so why can't a .tk be successful, when you're talking about the exact same thing?

A .co.cc is still a form of TLD, but a SLD (second level domain), like .co.uk. Why can't a site on a .co.cc or .co.nr be as successful as a site on a .co.uk? They are the exact same form of SLD.

Why should the domain be the limitation of success? Also, a .tk can be configured so it's not a redirect.

I don't own a forum *currently* however, I would register (if available on one of those domains) because the average Joe thinks .com is the only thing. So they would like yourforum.com instead of something like yourforum.info for example

I would use a .com because they are the best domains.

I have a few domains, most of which are .net's.
I've had .co.uk before, as a gift.
