does anyone ever get fake users like this:

Name: !!--biudeuuol Email: [email protected]
Location: cialisviagravideosales

I don't see why anyone would set up a fake account, and either spam or not use it. Are they
done using bots?

Yes they are usually done by bots. Sometimes though just recently it has been humans doing the signing up and then they pass it on to bots to login and post... Usually at a later date.

Enable email activation or even better add an anti spam mod like we have here here. We still get the odd one or 2 sign up but no where near as much as if we would stay using the phpBB3 CAPTCHA.

Yeah fowler is right you need a bit more lets say defense for when people register.

Depending on what forum software you use it should be easy.

I know with ipbfree email activation and captcha has stopped the problems.

On phpbb3 same thing.

infact I think also any decent forum software atleast has email verification

Only forum software I would not use anymore is invision free.

phpBB3 (which he uses) does have CAPTCHA but as phpBB3 is a very popular forum software and well used it is a big target by the spammers and because of that the spammers have been able to crack the phpBB3 default CAPTCHA so that is not that useful. It does stop some of the older bots but all the newer and updated ones can sign up on a un modified phpBB3 forum.

The idea is to make your sign up page different and not as default. The bots can sign up when it is default but when you add a different anti-spam method or add some required profile fields then they will start to have some problems.

Very good post, spyka.

This is a war we will never win, same as hollywood going after fileshares. Everytime we get around them, they get around us, because they're just as smart, and they have no rules or limits that apply. We have to make sure we keep it simple enough real users don't get annoyed. Because we have limits and they don't, there will always be spam bots ~wink~

:twistedman: *whistles*

reCaptcha sorted out IPB's few days of spamming and bot creation exploit. Simple 'Type No if you are a bot' fields in registration forms seem to work.

ya... this few week my forum always get bot spam... my forum is phpbb3.0.1 with default sign up, but i already added email validation, they still can sign up.. ~redface~

They can still sign up with email validation but they can't always activate their account as quite often they use fake emails.

Email domains are more useful to ban then individual emails. Also alot of spammers we have here are using gmail.
