Am I the only one who gets annoyed by this?

It annoys me that people say 'we' as if they are a staff member and represent the forum. They don't, and it's also a discrete way of backseat moderation IMO.

Yeah it is kind of a way of the member thinking they are irreplaceable and a huge part of the forum, when they're not. They're egoistic and delusional. Not that I don't think members are important, its just that some people think they are the s*** when they clearly aren't.

If it was a known fact and it wasn't in a backseat moderating context then I wouldn't mind, but if they were saying something that the team didn't think themselves then it would be misleading.

I woulden't like it if it was a new guy to the forum trying to fit in a saying that. Now on the other hand if it was a long time dedicated member who has been with us for a while and has a fairly decent amount of posts, it doesn't mean as bad because he/she may have been on the forum longer than most staff.

I haven't had anyone say that on my forum but I have seen that on other forums, and it is annoying when they are not on the staff, when they are it's not to bad but when there not it can get annoying because it's as if they are like, in charge really.

I don't like backseat moderators but I dont mind people saying "we"
Members make up the community, as a community member they are part of the "we"

I couldn't have put it better myself.

Like SA, I couldn't have put that one better myself. You should feel honored and valued if your members say "we" like it's their forum. Because it makes them feel appreciated, and it means that they truly enjoy being a part of your community. While that would confuse me to an extent to hear someone say, "we here at Chatting Time..." I would also feel proud and grateful that people appreciate all the hard work I put in to my forum.

If people say something along the lines of "We hate Nickelback," I really don't mind it, as nobody likes that garbage. However saying something like "We don't like you, take your snobby attitude somewhere else," is wrong unless there has been a community consensus that
a.) Said member has a snobby attitude
b.) Said member isn't liked
c.) That another forum may benefit from the snobby attitude of said person.

Depends on the context. If they are acting like a staff member then it can be rather annoying but if they're perhaps welcoming somebody to the site then I don't mind.

I agree with theezy, KG and fanta.

If they said, "We all are happy for you to join" then by all means that is accepted. If they said, "We don't your like actions", then I would take that as backseat moderating, and is not appreciated.

It really depends on the context.

If it was like, "We don't tolerate that sort of post around here. 😉 " to another member, then heck yes that would annoy me.

But if for example a member posted a funny image and someone posted, "We like that kind of stuff here. ", then it's perfectly fine.

^ That.

It's a beautiful thing when your regular members take pride in your community.

It bothers me a lot. Like TDM said, if someone pops up saying " HERE, WE DON'T TOLERATE THAT, GET OUT " then that really pisses me off.. but like " We are a happy forum here, everyone has fun " is fine.

I've never had this problem, but I can see how you find it annoying. The backseat moderating is really annoying though, for some reason most people thinks doing it improves their chances of getting a promotion quickly.

This depends on several factors. As others have said, if "we" is used in backseat moderation, it's generally annoying when regular members do it. However, if a user who has been on the forum for a very long time uses "we" to correct a new user who isn't doing something correctly (provided that they aren't condescending), then it isn't too bothersome.

I agree with Snobo its rather nice if long standing members feel so akin with the staff and community that they do that !
