Not being allowed to advertise in other's sites

I've been thinking about it for a while, and I think it makes no sense for admins not to allow advertising in their site because it will take away a considerable percentage of their memberbase or takes away a lot of traffic in some way, something that never happens. Of course it's an admin's right to set up whatever rules they want to, but it's the reason for it that's the issue here.

I don't agree with you. I think the majority of people wanting to promote and advertise do not contribute to the forum as genuine members. So if you think about it, their membership is no better than that of a spam account.

Joining to be a member is one thing, joining to promote and spam your forum is a complete different story entirely.

If the member was with the forum for x number of years and started a forum, that is different. But if you're joining only to promote than that may not be the best idea.

It's fine with me if there's no advertising section. You go to a forum to participate not promote. I only expect that on a promotion/advertising/webmaster type forum.

I think it is tacky for another admin to go to another forum to advertise their site? I am on many forums and I don't advertise my site on those forums.

You don't see Mcdonald's advertising in a Wendy's parking lot?

I don't allow advertising on my forum not because I am afraid of anything...it's because my forum is not some place for you to market your community.

You don't go to someone's party and start passing out flyers to your party. It's tacky and personally it screams desperation of admins IMO to do that.

I agree this is a Big Pain and I have to go to sites Like this to get members/Hire more staff. its a pain and a BIG Issue.
i thinks so, ads this increa member but quality down :v

How about investing in CPM traffic and advertise in different sites? You can try Bluagile's self-serve DSP to get more traffic and brand visibility for your website. Since a DSP is connected with different ad exchanges thus you can access more inventory

It's pretty annoying when a site has draconian rules on this type of thing. I can understand what they're trying to do though: I think the idea is that if you post content just to make your signature link more visible for example, it will just promote low quality content.

Advertising on my forums is a bit different than many other forums. I allow non-commercial signature links unless the commercial site is directly related to the niche, and I mean directly. I also allow competition to have a signature link as long as I can do the EXACT same without any restrictions on their forum as well - that is completely fair, IMPO.

I allow external links to be posted on topics and replies but only when appropriate (i.e. it is being discussed, it adds to the topic, etc.).

I do not usually allow topics dedicated to advertising... I do not allow guests or non-logged in members to see signatures at all. I do not allow these things, because my forums are NOT promotion forums - I don't spend all my money on them to turn them into promotion forums. There is nothing wrong with that kind of niche but that isn't the niche that I am targeting with my forums.

And finally, advertising to me is mainly constrained on my forums simply because all my forums are 100% ad-free for everyone. I do not show external ads on my forum. I show ads to services, products and sales that are a part of my forum but not too many of them, either.

It would be hypocritical of me to allow the forum to get swamped up with member advertising and spam but to be against ads on a message forum as well.

I create a forum for the community not to get rich fast or some FANTASY like that!
