When I log into some communities I am a little thrown when they have tons boards but then I quickly realize that they have a very active forum. It started to make me think, "do I have enough boards and categories?" What is a good number of categories in a forum and how many boards do you consider to be an optimum amount?
Have seen both, large content and members base with a low amount of boards and not too far to scroll up and down. Depends on the site and what it does and offer really 🙂
I guess I would answer it with this: If you are asking if you need more boards, then maybe add some more 🙂 But have them be different. I've been to forums where they have so many boards of the Same Thing! It was quite redundant.
I think you should first ask yourself if you're willing to keep each board active. Sure a few boards will only be active when an updated is needed or when an update is appropriate such as Forum News, Forum Support, New Member Introductions, and Marketplace, just to name a few examples.
But for the main topic or "niche" boards associated with your forum, these boards should be be kept very active so ask yourself if you have the time commitment and abilities to keep those boards active. Because we all know that when you first start a forum, the content for the most part will be coming from you, the forum owner.
If you start a forum with 30+ boards, it is going to be overwhelming for you to manage, right? So start only the ones you really want the forum to have but keep in mind that they will require your commitment!
I think it's okay to have a small to medium amount in the beginning. When your community grows and becomes larger, then it's okay to branch out or add more because of the activity.
