Offering staff positions

Typically, you get staff on your forum if you have positions available (as by an announcement of some sort) and people then get back to you on what they can do for you plus any relevant experience. Sometimes though, you would become generous and offer someone the job but if you do, you would need to have a good enough reason as to why you chose that person to help you out. So to any other admins here, do you do it, or not?

For myself, I've done it a few times but only if I know in my mind that the person I've chosen can serve me well and of course, activity is a must. Sometimes I make the offer just for a bit of back-up like the time my dedicated developer was absent for an indefinite time and I needed someone to fill in the gap (although two I asked, whom I know already, had declined because they were too busy with other things which I can perfectly understand).

I think in the early years I offered to a couple friends to help out, which they did.

I generally have people in mind, but 90% of the time, I don't really need additional administrators or moderators. Sometimes, what you really need is a lot less than you think you do, unless you have a particularly large site.

My gaming community is currently moderated by two people, one of whom is myself. We're quite a small community, so it works for now. I believe you need to find someone truly passionate who have shown their commitment to your community over the long run. If and when it's necessary to bring on new staff, it's best to weigh out your options and make it an equal opportunity for all who seek the role. Also, try to broadcast the position in as many places as possible such as Discord, other communities, your websites social media platforms, etc.

I think starting an new site you better off with one to two staff and no more, you get more in as the site grows more and more.
