Earlier this year (2011) my laptop decided to crap out on me, and it was filthy to the point where it needed not only fixing, but cleaning as well. Managed to lose the original charger in the process, so I had to go out and replace it. I have my laptop plugged in, and this is funny: Charger's plugged in, it says it's not charging, but yet my battery is very close to being full. Or did I finally do the right thing and let it charge up for a while again?

The charger could be messed up. Who is the maker of the laptop?

It's a Dell. And I'm not so certain about the charger being messed up, because I just woke up a few moments ago (thanks to a certain someone who decided to jump on my bed even though I'm still sick! 😡) and my computer is actually fully charged. It's actually one of those chargers where there are different tips, and you select and plug in the tip based on what sort of computer you have. They list the brands of the computers (Dell, Mac, etc.) and there's little numbers on the thing of the charger. Using the guide, you simply look up what brand of computer you have, look at the number next to that brand,, and find the number of the outlet that best suits the brand of computer you own.

Anyway, I have a feeling this is one of those chargers that only charge up your computer when you're not using it. Because it doesn't do a thing when I'm using it, but then when I put it on sleep or shut it down all the way, it charges. This is the first time I've ever had to replace my charger, so I really know nothing about these things, to be honest.

Check to make sure your using the right voltage on the charger or you'll be doing more damage then good.

Ahh you are using a universal charger. You are most likley not using the right point. I had the same problem when I bought myself a universal charger. Even though it plugged in just fine with the tip I was using, the charging light never turned on. I changed tips and it worked just fine.

Voltages are different on every pc, you should always buy the charger that is specifically for that laptop. 😉 Try amazon, real cheap.

dell works that way as far as i know. dell products works on dell too but not to others.
