Why would a site that has been open from 2005 still have a co.cc domain?

We are a small project and we closed in 2009 and the domain expired we have not had the money to renew it as we earn no revenue

Yes I have alot of problems in my life and that has to come first so the sites has to be closed. Trying my hardest to do both now though
