One Man's Freedom Fighter

The president of our country had recently declared the rebels a.k.a. freedom fighters to be considered terrorists. Those rebels are staying in the remote mountain areas for so many decades before I was born. It makes me wonder why they have to be fighting that way. In fact, rebellion here is not violent unlike in some African countries. Those rebels are just pain the neck of the government, so to speak. When the present president assumed the position, he opened the gates for peace talks but the aging leaders of the rebels have nothing good to say so the peace talks did not prosper. And as I said, those rebels are now considered terrorists.

There some extremists where I live.

We don't have a close encounter with the rebels here but almost. In one trip to a family friend who lives in the forested mountain, my husband was surprised with the cheap cost of the land so he intimated to the friend there that maybe we can buy 5 hectares and turn it into a small ranch with maybe 10 heads of cattle at first. The friend said that it's not a good idea because the rebels will come and make that ranch their milking cow which means they will ask for one head for their food.

I visited the Philippines a few times. I mostly went to Cebu, Manila. I avoided the Mindanao (Muslim controlled) and never ran into the rebels. Anyway, like in many places, they seem more like pirates or extortioners. Wouldn't that be like US prison gangs who care less about ideology, but more about hustling drugs, cigarettes?

@Jason76, there is a variety of rebels here and their lairs are scattered all over the country. Your mention of Mindanao is only for the Muslim rebels. But you may not believe that provinces beside Manila have their own rebels - Bulacan, Laguna, Quezon and even Cavite. They are called NPA which stands for New People's Army. It makes one wonder what they are fighting for since we have a proper government and a fairly good economy to speak of. That's why many people agree that they should be branded terrorists. But for me, they should be tagged as extortionists for that's their livelihood, extorting money from the scared businessmen.

So where are the freedom fighters in that scene?

The tyrannical world the extremists envision is no doubt horrible, and I think they really believe in it, but most of the time they just bully locals like American gangs do.
