I am going to be getting a new laptop soon as my current one is years and years old and is next to useless. As i do not want to pay stupid money for Microsoft Office as it does cost alot i was thinking about alternatives and a popular one is OpenOffice.org

Does anyone use this? What do they think of it? By the looks of it, it does seem really good.

Open Office is alright, but there is a slight learning curve since it is kind of different from MS Word. I recommend you to find a book on Open Office and read it.

I never got Word Art to work properly in Open Office.

I don't really use Word much as it is (or any others). I only use it every so often so that is why i don't want to upgrade it and pay Microsofts stupid prices.

I didnt know there was such a thing as stupid money. -lol-

Anyways never heard of that thing you mentioned. Office is great. But not worth the money in my opinion, I dont have any word processing programs or anything like that on my computer as I am not in school and my job does not require anything computer related.

over here, the term "stupid money" is used to describe a gargantuan amount, or "excessive prices". ~wink~

Anyway I've had Open Office installed and it's far more user friendly than Office 2007. Seeing as it supports .doc It's the next best office suite after Office 2003. haven't had a great amount of experience with it myself, but it does the job and is the best free option available. ~smile~

Is it made by Sun?
Their main headquarters are not too far from my house. My aunt worked for them for nearly 20 years and they laid her off. If they had a union her job would have been safe since she had far more seniority than other people working there. -angry-

Anyways, I am going to try it out.. its free after all. 😛

Doesn't it come with Microsoft Works by default? I personally don't mind Microsoft Works, when I used the OpenOffice word processing program it kept jumping lines. :|

I like OpenOffice, but I have to admit that MS Office 2007 looks a way sleeker. On Ubuntu I don't have a choice but to use it.

Really, the only minor problem I have is that it doesn't know the rule of the mighty comma. But then again, maybe it's time I learn how to write proper English -D-

Try it, and if you don't like it, then fork out the money. You could try the trial version of Office 2007 professional as well.
