So are forums a thing of the past? Are they worth starting now? I used to be big in the forum arena but I see now my friends are in Facebook Groups, not forums. What are your thoughts?

Well... Compared to a one year old forum, my 3 month old Discord Server has over 4x the members and like 50x the activity 😀

Honestly, facebook groups and anything else that involves little planning, is always easier to kickstart more than forums. There will always be a need for different types of forums. Just like in the past, forums take planning and dedication to get started. Rarely do you find a forum that instantly takes off.

Well, Forums are dead with you around LOL

Most forums aren't compatible with tablets or smartphones, so that appeal alone is enough to scare casuals away. Most people don't even use computers anymore, let alone have them.

Maybe it's going back to the early 90s when on Married With Children, Al massively regrets buying a useless computer. :meh: In those days, computers were for gamers, banks, and computer aficionados.

If forums were a thing of the past then you would not be posting this thread on this or any other forum as there would be none around to post it on.

If you are trying to attempt to find what people want then the board you will end up making won't last regardless of the genre. The only thing that's going to keep you going is a genuine interest and passion for the subject matter. If you don't have an genuine interest and passion for the subject matter then it won't last no matter how popular the subject matter might be. If there are people who share your interests and have the same passion as you do for it then you will find them eventually however you must be willing to put in time and effort into it and be patient in not expecting instant results.

They can be made compatible. I think most themes are trying to be compatible.

Forums aren't active as much as they used to be but they aren't dead!

Forums aren't dead, but 10 years ago it was much easier to get active members. The only thing that has changed is that your forum has to be more unique, and offer something more than social media and other forums. That little extra is harder than just installing a forum suit and starting to post threads, but it's not impossible.

back then there aren't many that was into Facebook or whatnot and even make then Facebook did not have pages and other options like they have now

I don't feel like forums are dead, there are plenty that prove they are very much alive. However saying that most of these active forums have been around for years and have probably been advertised everywhere including word of mouth. But in all fairness they were probably more active years ago rather than the present day, to be honest I feel like you get more of a community in a forum rather than a Facebook group. Sure it may be a lot easier to communicate with friends and individuals through messenger apps, however being a part of a community it's a lot more fun, meaningful and interactive.

Yes you have a point considering what is more accessible and commonly used, which is a phone. On the other hand so to speak what is more easier and visually to navigate also
