Most people use forum software to have a community with forums, sub-forums, threads, posts, discussions, etc...

Have you used forum software for other purposes?

I'm currently using MyBB to host a stand-alone arcade (because we converted the forum to XenForo & XF doesn't have a good arcade plugin at the moment, plus I didn't want everyone to lose their scores).

I completely removed all forum-related aspects from that MyBB installation and it functions is solely as an arcade. It was a fun little side project for me and I was just curious if any of you have ever gutted a forum just to use it for alternate, non-traditional reasons?

Wow, way to get creative! I can't say that I've ever done something like that with forum software, but I've used Wordpress before as a homepage, and also as a form manager. Sometimes you've just got to think outside the box and be a MacGyver, especially if you don't have the coding skills to make something yourself. 😛

That is really a clever idea! I would have never thought of this. I wonder if there's a way to have something where you have a forum that allows mass emails and other off site gadgets that you can't have in a free hosting environment? Not a second forum, really, but something that's easier to work with in terms of sending out emails? You can send mass mail on the host I'm on, but it's frustrating with all the steps you have to take in order to send one lousy email?

This is a very interesting idea. At one glance it feels like a waste to only use a forum software for an arcade, but at the same time inspire us to actually think outside the box!

I'm running a WordPress blog for university project. I only need it to give basic information in pages and use the form for registration. I don't even use the posts which is a vital point to a blog.

I can't say I've ever seen this done before, theezy. Very cool idea. Doing something like this really steps outside the box.

This is a very interesting idea. I haven't seen this before but I have seen something similar for Wordpress. It was an arcade plugin which turned a Wordpress site into an arcade. It was very clever and useful. It is also a cheap plugin so you don't have to spend tons on an arcade script with a custom backend as there was the wordpress Admin panel.

I think I've seen people try and adapt forum software to act as a wiki or content site. It's certainly doable in the later versions of IPB or Burning Board, where the forum part is actually optional.

That's a neat idea Theezy. I have seen someone use a forum for a blog, and the site was basically read only but that's about it.

Well, WordPress is after all a CMS, not a blog, so while it's mainly used for blogging purposes, it's not very unusual to see it only as a simple more-or-less static website front end, a forum or even a social media platform.

I've used a forum software before as a CMS. Pretty complicated, so luckily Wordpress was able to take over.

Never thought about having an arcade, very creative. XF needs an arcade plugin though. 😛

I saw a forum used as a wiki once.

One time I considered integrating eCom features into my neverending-development free forum host.
