We have just installed CCTV in our home. I am excited about it so I am posting this thread. Can you imagine that I can see the view of the cctv camera via the internet? Gee, that’s really great, so hi-tech huh. We took the 3-camera package only for $500 that includes everything, from materials to labor plus tutorial on how to operate. I’m really satisfied with our CCTV. When we travel, I am excited to view our house online.
I can understand the benefits of being able to check in at times... But I still don't like the idea of a CCTV in my home to begin with. But I especially don't like the idea of CCTV when hooked to the internet in any fashion. I mean once you hook a device to the internet you risk losing the chance of maintaining privacy and control.
And we've seen this with things as innocent as a child's doll that connects to a server for voice recognition/response suddenly being used as a microphone.
In this case having a camera connected to the internet is a liability since anyone who gains access can see who's coming and going. Thus they can watch, basically undetected, to learn patterns and routines to know when to break in. There used to be a TV show (aired in 2005-2007) called "It Takes a Thief" where former thieves would show just how easy they could break in and steal things. These guys didn't have high tech options like a camera system to use, they just watched and waited from outside. So, to me, putting an externally accessible camera into my home is only a recipe for disaster.
Truth is they aren't going to know what's actually inside until they break in. (Unless they've been invited inside in the past and had a chance to scope it out.) So if they're going to risk breaking in they're likely either desperate or stupid.
Plus you'd probably be surprised what people keep in their homes that has value... And how quickly a home can be rummaged through.
I think CCTV is a fantastic way, of seeing burglars and that on the property. Another way is having a dog protecting you. A lot of the rich people have it.
@VirusZero it looks like you care too much about your privacy. I am surprised that you are not comfortable with cctv connected to the internet. That internet conection is the primary reason why we had installed the cctv, so we can see our home when we are away. With burglars hacking into the website that handles our cctv, I don't think they can break in into our home because we have 3 dogs inside the house and 2 housemaids.
I don't think there is such a thing as care too much about privacy. Our privacy has eroded far too much. People are far too comfortable giving up their privacy with nary a thought of what it means. I mean from people posting on their facebook pages "going away for weekend" to tweeting "enjoying my vacation, see you next week" to allowing tech like Amazon Echo to listen to their every word.
Companies most assuredly are listening in. But they're definitely not the only ones. Do people even remember project prism (the NSA's program that was spying on American citizens)?
If anything I'd say people don't care enough about their privacy.
