So I'm looking for ideas on how to promote my site other than using promotion forums & top-sites. Platforms like Google Adwords and prohibitively expensive and not an option to me. Any ideas?

You can try social media, but it typically doesn’t help people that much.

put paid adverts out on social media and use what promotion websites offer. Doesn't hurt to do posts exchange's. It will take time to grow and important to have good seo

Do some guest posting on relevant and high quality sites which will provide you relevant traffic.

SEO? Have you tried SEO? Ranking for long tail keywords isn't usually that hard 🙂

You should look in to "Guest Posting" this is a long process but if you put the time in to getting to know a high ranking blog for your niche it will give extreme results in such a short time span.

What you do is spend a few months trying to get to know the owner of the high ranking blog, become friendly with him, get to know him like you never try this hard before. Then once you fished them in, ask them if you can write articles for him/her blog ask to see if you can add links that is useful for the blog owner blog and then try find something that is useful on your site that relates to the article your posting on the owners blog and connect them up this will work perfectly and rank you pretty fast if the blog is high ranking already.

Hope this helps have fun.

Everything takes time, it's if you have the motivation to keep up with it.

Boosts on Facebook seem pretty cheap compared to AdWords and BingAds, but I could be wrong. However, though, free ads on Facebook will only reach a tiny percentage, hence why they're not useful - unless you have a group or page with 10,000 people or something.

Have you tried SEO tactics like Social Bookmarking, blog submission, guest post, infographic submission etc. These tactics are useful in getting your website promoted.
