What types of forums do you think have been highly overdone? Is there a need for more of those types of forums?

As in there is way too many of them. Forums of the same genre being excessively created.

forum promotion websites -happy-

I'm not so sure I agree. With Forum Promotion sites they need the basic service forums (packages, reviews, advertise here...) as that's what the forum is there for. If the admin decides that users need posts or points to use their services then off-topic sections need to be made to give users the opportunity to earn the posts or points they need for the services.

I find general chat forums are overdone more often than any other kind of forum. When they are set us the admins create as many forums as possible when lots of them could be merged, for example: tv discussion / soap disussion / drama discussion.

It's better to start off with very few forums and add them as and when they are needed / requested.

I think there is way too many gaming and anime forums out there.

Gaming themed sites. Who needs another gamer chat forum? I mean really, search google for "NIntendo Forum" and you get bazillions of hits.

I have no problem with new sites, just as long as the admins are willing to put in a little work. I think there are too many dead or dying sites... New sites always have potential...

agreed. THere are too many 1000 posts sites that the admins give up on and make new ones which get to 1000 and then die and the cycle repeats

I would say forum advertising is over done and most aren't well thought out and just copy what others who have done well had done and they fail.

Same goes for general chat but the one I run I felt I took the time to pay attention to the things I see that I don't like and the things I don't see that I do like on forums and try to incorporate those observations so I have a nicely run forum that people can enjoy being at.

If it is done right then no forum genre would be overdone if only the people who knew what they were doing and took the time to do it right made a forum but we seen so many crappy ones that we get sick of the genre in question.

Probably resource and advertizing forums.. don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against them, it's just that a lot of admins start them up, only to give up on them about a month or 2 later.. because of inactivity..

I agree totally, I had one with 60K+ posts before I sold it.. but even making it that far the upkeep was just terribly hard and finding new members. You defintely need a good owner to keep them up... as I can tell I must have done ok since the new owner has managed to give the site about 100 posts in the 2 weeks since I sold it.

And keeping the google rank is amazingly hard as well, I got it on the first page but had to be constantly advertising... now as the post count... the site's google rank has dropped incredibly as well. Too many general gaming sites, now game specific sites are good.. because they have a sole focus. General gaming just kills itself because it's so hard to get a strong member base.

GAMING! Wayyyyyyyy toooooo many, not even joking, there are so many.... I'd have to say that is my number one overdone forum.

Promotion boards are probably the worst overdone. Gaming, anime and general chat boards are also overdone IMO.
