It can help, depending on how much one is willing to spend, where one advertises, and if one uses broad keywords or specific keywords.
I advertised an affiliate link before on Google Adwords, and got something like 10 signups out of $50 worth of text advertising.

I guess it can help although there's probably more opportunity to advertise for free through forums like this one because if you spend to much it'll get costly. Plus I'm not sure I'd personally sign up to a forum on a search results page, but probably would seeing a topic posted here.

When I was active on my forum, I didn't have a job, so I couldn't pay for it.
Ah I see. Did you generate any income from your forum? If so, you could have paid for the advertising with that.
I didn't because it never got super active and I'm not 18 so I couldn't do the Google Adsense thing.
Well, if it's any consolation, I think paid advertising is a waste of time.
Unless you're willing to spend a lot of money on ads & you target them to specific niche based audiences.
Paid advertisement helps for others that somewhat get lucky then the rest. I had an low budget before and used it for paid and all I got out of it is traffic and no new signups then got be thinking it's damn bots again.
This is my main job, I'm advertising on Facebook with many campaigns to get more fans (for fanpage) and traffic (for website). Beside of paid advertising, I also do SEO to get organic traffic too.

Definitely paid advertising works. Why do you think we are inundated with advertising ads everywhere!? 😀 If they didn't work, we wouldn't see any ads lol. Paid advertising can be very effective at promoting something. But only really if that ad is a targeted ad. Only if it is shown to the right people. Or a large enough amount of them so that some of them will be interested in it. That's why TV advertising works so well but also why it's so expensive! But yeah, you can give it a punt anyway! 😀
I think it's only better if you have a right strategy on buying ads otherwise you should go with free promotion such as SEO, social media...

Paid advertising helps if you are willing you have good spending budget. This is a good way to increase your reach quickly and get quick leads with proper planning and strategy.

Believe it or not, I just spent $80+ on google/YouTube ads and got a decent amount of traffic and new user registrations!
