Sometimes I will look up a domain name to see if it's available and it will lead me to a page stating that the domain is parked - then there are a bunch of links you can click on. What is the point of this? Does the owner of the domain name get paid for clicks or does the host earn revenue for allowing a person to park the domain?
It's always disheartening to attempt to register a domain only to find it parked or just completely not in use. I tried to snag a domain based on my name a few weeks ago which isn't in use at all.
Domain parking is a profitable business for a small number of people. Parking companies like Sedo and CashParking by Godaddy not only pay for clicks on the links of parked pages but also for straight redirects (where a visitor to a parked domain gets redirected to a similar website- which can be a bit misleading).
Hosts don't generally make money from parked domains. Some domain registers will put up parked pages before a domains nameservers are changed with ads to make a little extra revenue.
I really do not get the whole parking domains thing; sure if you are going to use that domain in the future, sure park it. However if you are going to buy it just for the lulz, I don't see why you should park it. Sell it for top dollar and keep the domains rolling. Personally I find parking domains is hogging domains, unless of course you need it, like a company change and you use it to redirect users, etc.
The domain registrar sets this as the default for if you are not using the domain (or at least many registrars do). The domain owner doesn't get anything out of it in most cases. 😛 I wouldn't say that it's entirely pointless, though. If registrars earn revenue from parked domain pages, I imagine that makes their prices a little bit lower.
