Sir Paul McCartney was knighted for his achievements in music not only for his stint with The Beatles but also for his individual contribution with his band The Wings. He and John Lennon are the main composers of the songs of The Beatles and he continued composing when the band disbanded. Although the media dubbed Paul to be second fiddle to John in terms of popularity, Paul had outlived John so he is now considered more popular. His later songs Band on the Run and Only Love Remains are now classic in their own right.

His music was a bit less self-righteous than John's. But I'm not saying John's post-Beatle stuff was bad, though. It's only that the political/philosophical stuff become nerve wrecking. Anyway, ironically, Paul's "Silly Love Songs" was as philosophical as any Lennon tune.
