Do you guys pay for your fonts (Premium or custom) used in your projects / creations , or do you prefer to use the good ol' free ones out there?

If you do pay for them, what was the last font you remember buying and was it worth it? 😛

I prefer not to buy fonts for my stuff, as they're often expensive and I don't really have the money available at the moment to spend on custom fonts. Let's just say I don't see myself buying any custom / premium fonts any time soon.

I never pay for my fonts! I always get them for free! 🙂

Bought Helvetica Neue because it's gorgeous. Would't mind having a custom script font like backpack, Idk where you get custom fonts made though?

I purchased Gotham a while ago and I wouldn't mind paying for other exceptionally good fonts. I tend to find the better fonts too expensive, though.

I'm probably being narrow-minded (I hope) and I have never really had the need to buy a font so I was wondering apart from owning the license to use a font or to support the font creator, is there any other reason to actually use purchased fonts?

I always use google fonts. There are thousands and marvelous fonts out there for free!

I use Adobe Creative Cloud, so that includes TypeKit which has tons of paid fonts for free. It's nice when I'm in love with a premium font and find that I actually am paying for it with my subscription. 😀

Other than that, no, I've never bought a font before.

Dafont and Google fonts. 😛

I would never pay for fonts, theres plenty of free ones out there that come pretty close to the premium ones. And I really have not found sites that even sell them, so it never came across my mind to begin with. Lol

No, I have never purchased a font before. There are a lot of awesome free ones out there. If I had a successful website that helped me earn a lot of money, maybe I would consider it, but that will probably never happen.

Yes, the quality of real, foundry-created fonts just cannot be replicated by free ones. It shows in the details of a font - free ones often lack many extra characters that may be important depending on your use, the kerning (spacing between two characters) can often be terrible, and they don't always scale quite as well. These are things that general users of fonts don't really care that much about, so you can definitely get away with using a free font much of the time. I'm a huge fan of Google Fonts myself.

Like Peter, I also have access to the Creative Cloud Typekit database (and I love it). I haven't purchased a font yet, but I do intend to later on once I graduate and start my career as a freelancer. I do use paid fonts in my designs for some clients, however, and they have to purchase them for that use.

Dafont.com has so many free options I don't imagine I would ever pay for a font unless it was a critical part of my idea of a logo or something and I want a very specific design or something when itcomes to the text. ...and of course, if it's a project that I'm actually getting paid to do. I don't mind spending money to make more money sometimes.

So far I use only free fonts but if a client needs then I have no problem buying a premium font. (Client pays)

The problem isn't so much with the design selection, but more the quality of the designed fonts. Many free ones are poorly designed (not always apparent right away, but if you look closely) or are missing certain characters.

Paying for fonts has always kind g annoyed me. 😛 They seem like an odd thing to pay for. I guess I need to look into the TypeKit terms, as I have a subscription along with my creative cloud plan, so I may be able to get premium fonts for free, not sure.
