If you find a staff member on another forum who is extremely liked by that community, would you consider paying them to work on your own forum? If this person worked on your forum (even for pay), they would be able to use their influence and popularity bring over some of the members from the competing forum. Would this be worthwhile for your own forum?

I think it may attract some of the users who probably follow them around but I just hate paying staff members. I feel that for a good forum community, the staff should actually want to help out, not because they're getting paid. So ultimately, no I don't think it'd be a great idea for me.

...and have a forum full of groupies who will leave when that popular person leaves because you can't afford to bribe them anymore? I'll pass. 😛

It's not even worth it. I personally wouldn't pay to get them on my forum. I might tell them about my forum, but not go as far as 'recruiting' them. That's just desperate in a way.

In all my years on the net there was only one person I would have paid to work on my forum, sadly I didn't have the means back then, but no I really wouldn't pay them. As soon as I stop paying them they would most likely leave along with everything they brought.

Not something I'd do, it sounds like I am more about getting the followers that the member in particular and that can backfire.

There is a lot of people I'd love to have had in my forums, but as hard as I was to myself and never really brought up the subject, I wouldn't have considered offering them payment to count with the honor of their presence. I'd probably pay in exchange of a service or something I cannot do, but not solely to use them as a bragging medal or endorsement. I want people to be proud enough of my place to feel moved to share them without my push, that genuine action is the best compliment.

I personally don't like to pay my staff. I especially wouldn't want to hire a respected moderator and then pay them, I feel that if they want to be staff then they should know that it's a volunteer job. I wouldn't mind hiring them, but even then they could forget about my forum and go straight back to the forum they originally were staff on. :\
