I had been commissioned to post in a forum. When I received the payment, I noticed that there was a fee charged by Paypal. That means I got lesser than the agreed amount. Is the service charge normal for such transactions? I had been receiving my online earnings via Paypal for 2 years now and this is the first time I had experienced paying a service charge to Paypal. Any opinion on this?

Ask the employer to pay a little more than what's agreed to cover the fee.

Yes PayPal charge a fees both for the buyer and the seller for transactions through their gateway. This is a big drawback with PayPal.

Yeah, but PayPal is a business. How else can they make money?

If you don't want to pay the fee you can accept as family and friends but that's risky to the buyer and also it's against terms so if they find out you could get a penalty. Let's say you charge $10 for a service. Next time charge say $10.50 so the fee is taken into account.
