Okay before you read on if you like MyBB I am not saying MyBB sucks okay 🙂 .

So today I was on MyBB support forum . I seen one of the support staff has a link to a facebook connect plugin.

I thought wow about time.. I clicked the link and it turns out to be a paid plugin.

Now I am not against paid plugins, but really seeing all these paid plugins for this software is crazy.

The reason being most of them are either built into other software or are free plugins.

It really seems like people are using MyBB for a quick buck and doesn't make MyBB look better.

Labrocca is the only mod maker I have seen make a worth buying plugin.

All these others making things like Facebook Connect and Default Thread Template paid plugins ... Makes me sad and want to stop using MyBB.

I mean really Default Thread Template ... paid?? PHPBB SMF IPB all have this plugin for free.

IDK maybe its just me that it bothers, but having to pay a 10-50 dollar subscription to download plugins I could get free with other software just makes me not want to use MyBB

What are your views on this subject.

Now with all that said I do like MyBB itself, I find it to be great software 🙂.

Was it AJS, by chance?

To be fair, Lennart has the Ad suite plugin as well, so I thought I had my $12 well-spent.

Honestly, the only person on MyBB who has a fair subscription system is Pirata Nervo (NewPoints), as the only subscriber-only plugins are ones that allow one to "make money."

I use mybb on my forum and there are paid plugins, but the majority of them are free, and the best ones are free, so regardless I still wouldnt switch because MyBB is just as good as vbulletin or better since its free in my opinion.

I agree, but it is kind of like shopping at different stores. One might be a store you like, but everything is priced high, or vice versa.

While it is true there are still alot of free plugins, it still bugs me that some people make plugins paid when any other forum software has he same one free. It wouldn't bug me as much if I knew certain paid plugins are pretty simple to code.

Might I add mybb is not the only place this is happening at.

Over at VB the biggest seo plugin is paid .. When any other forum software it is free.

MyBB - Google SEO and MyBB seo

SMF- SMF Seo and another I forget the name of

and thats the only ones that come to mind right now,

Twitch, if it makes you feel any better. I am learning PHP right now, and when I am done I will make free mybb plugins. Mostly the ones that you see are usually paid.

Because I understand, buying stuff for free software sucks, and most of the good plugins are paid.

Buying stuff for free software doesn't suck, what sucks is buying something I know I could be getting free with other free software or freeware software.

It is nice to know more mybb plugin makers are coming 🙂.

I believe that many users would like to make money from this and has become the "trend"; as they have seen users such as Jesse make a fair amount of money from this. Due to that many users are doing this with lower quality plug-ins -- and thus has ended up as it is.
If a few users make a few good quality plug-ins and release it for free, I believe the standard for paid plug-ins will rise to a much greater standard.

Then the users who want to release free plugins will just have to make their own versions of the premium ones and release them free.

If enough users band together and do this overall, premium plugin prices will god down. Because less people will be buying them.

Exactly people are using MyBB for quick cash... They do not really want to help MyBB .. It is getting so bad I really regret using MyBB now.

You can always convert to phpBB, IPB or Vbulletin you know, I am sure there are converters to convert to a better software 😉

The reason is down to how the plugins work.

With phpBB3, because plugins involve editing phpBB3 code, they HAVE to be released under the GPL, hence they must be free*

With MyBB, the plugin system is different. A plugin is a separate file(s) and does not touch the MyBB code and hence can be released under other licenses.

Obivously the MyBB system is better - plugin install is just uploading a file and clicking to activate the plugin, while phpBB3 is much more complex.

What will be interesting is what will happen if phpBB 3.2 implements a similar system for plugins, that could see a lot of paid phpBB3 mods released I think

* To be clear - the GPL doesn't say you can't charge, but if someone buys it they are allowed to distribute it for free, making it pointless to charge for GPL stuff.

phpBB has always been known for being free, I can't seeing this being any different when 3.2 gets released.

The forum software is but a few people have paid plug-ins that are better coded than normal plugins and are worth it.

As you said they do not have to be free. And they can make money even if it is gpl. People do it all the time with wordpress and joomla.

The people at mybb are just in it for the money.

@otherguy I might convert but not to any of those. If I convert it will be to smf.
