First of all, this is not aimed at anyone in particular I've just seen it alot.

Well, when anyone's forum starts to take off, they sell it ? You start getting active on a forum then it closes and all that time wasted?

Views?

If it's a forum rapidly growing, usually people aren't going to close it.

Personally, I would have determined potential before I register, so if I see that it may close or be sold in the near future then I would just not join.

Selling is not always a bad thing though. A new person could mean massive improvements. Putting selling the forum under the umbrella of closing a forum i think is wrong.

By selling a forum the forum will still be there and things will normally carry on the same (if not better) in most cases. Usually it may be a bit bumpy to start off with. Sometimes though selling a forum can result in all the time and effort being wasted. Promotion-Source was a massive example of that. That was a masterclass is how not to run a forum and how not to manage taking over a new forum.

Closing down the forum is bad and a waste of time for everybody and annoy people. Selling the forum doesn't always result in that. The users who make forums and sell them and make new ones get a reputation and will ultimately lose out when they actually start a forum and want to keep running it.

    That was the worst mistake ever made in my times on a forum.. I hate DigitPoint because of the members. They are normally domain squatters or domain redirecting to their own forum. If it's a forum then they'll put ads out the arse on it. That is what Promotion-Source did whenever it was sold.

I'd never sell my forum in a million years. Even if it was 100 times as active as it is. It has no price to me and never will.

This is probably a lot to do with the efforts. you know something, to run a forum is very difficult. it takes a lot of effort, and that too, consistent effort.

secondly, some do it for money, as soon as they get enough rankings on Alexia, they try to capitalize on it, and therefore sell it.

I have recently seen two promotion forums sell early. However, in the case of one of them, I know the new owner to be a very experienced forum administrator, and he already has big plans for his new forum, including a conversion to IPB. I look forward to seeing what he can do. As for the person who sold, he may have just wanted a profit all along, or may actually have no time anymore, and I don't care either way since I never had much attachment to the place.

Website flipping can become a major revenue proposition. I could have bought a simple $9 domain and then created a forum. A forum with about 5000 posts will sell for a good $70 depending on the buyer, but that's about $60 profit. Have about 10 of these sites at that's at least $600 profit.

Yeah, selling a site can lead to more success but we have seen forums gone down hill or close because of the sale. 😉

Selling can not be the best idea sometimes, as mentioned Promotion Source is a good example. But hopefully most of the time it works out like how FP did 🙂

Well, selling wasn't the issue there, it was the new, stupid owner 😛

Well I guess he didn't really know how to work a promotion forum.
