I hate to say it, but if flaming is a no-no on your forum, then you're not going to get that much activity. If you want to be a popular community, then you'll probably have to let members talk trash about each other. Let the ridiculous drama threads build up and explode on their own. Mature, intelligent discussions are boring to most people, due to shortened attention spans.

Something I've noticed about online communication, really. If you want to get an immediate response, you'll say or do something to really get them on their toes. The days of logical discourse on forums are over.

Heck yes. I am a fanboy when it comes to drama honestly. 😛

I was on this old forum a while back and it literally was a bunch of people causing drama between each other to keep things alive. The way I see it, if you censor people too much they are simply going to leave. Forums want this "clean" and "drama free" environment but let's be honest here, forums like that now are slowly falling apart and the mods are considered mini mods. You cannot nit-pick whats allowed on your forum and what's not, a forum has people on it, let the people post. If they have something bad to say about someone, like someone hacking their forum or ripping them off, let them say it. It embarasses the member who did it and gives the rest of the community the ability to know what happened in case they do it on another forum. You have to let people be people, and people are filled with drama. It's a community, it'd be no fun if there wasn't any drama. It'd be just a post here and a post there. 😛

I see this quite a lot over at Sonic Retro, mainly between members who have been around for years. It is interesting to see, just as long as it doesn't get too out of hand. 😛

I can see how this would be completely appropriate in some forums. Personally I avoid these type of communities because to be honest too much animosity between members in a forum makes me uncomfortable. There is already a lot of drama in the offline world that I have to deal with... forum dwelling is like an escape for me so I rather not be part of "drama".

A lot of forums are driven by drama, flaming, etc. but also a lot of forums aren't. It really just depends on the nature of the community. People will be people, and will inevitably trash talk each other, but generally when people are being civilized (both on forums and in real life) they won't talk trash about someone to their face. 😛

Drama can keep certain individuals entertained while making others uncomfortable.

Civilized, intelligent conversations can keep certain individuals stimulated while boring the drama queens.

It just depends on the crowd you've got I suppose.

I personally don't enjoy forums that have drama but it does work well for certain niches. I just don't like drama, in real life or online, so tend to stay away from it and keep it away from my forum.

Same here. Or else, if drama is only happening in a couple of discussions then I try to steer clear of such discussions and just post elsewhere if at all possible. Sometimes even that route is hard to take because once one issue gets shut down, four or five others spring up to take their places.

Have to agree with this

You even go on facebook always someone argueing on a page.

This is why you should probably allow GamerGate discussions if you have a gaming forum. Lots of drama and related activity there, especially if the sites kick off in a spectacular fashion.

Launching personal attacks on any of my online communities is a quick way to get banned. We don't mind civil debates though.

Drama is in everything. If you pray for rain, you gotta deal with the mud too.
