People who make a 'clone' of your forum?

I agree. You'd be wasting so much time to sue another forum creator who tried to clone your forum. Getting a lwayer and such would cost more than the plagiarism in the first place. Because of a few things:

1. If a person who clones a forum is too lazy and unimaginative to create his/her own ideas for his/her forum, then that person will enver have a successful forum, one that should already be announced dead.

2. If your forum is valuable enough to be copied. You shouldn't sweat it, chances are your members are loyal if your forum is active and well created, and that they won't pay heed to communities that fail to even come up with their own creative ideas.

3. Although you might be pretty angry someone copied your forum. You shouldn't take actions like you did Shady. Filing a DMCA notice was too early. You should take decisions with a calm mind, as you were pretty angry according to your first post, stating you would not complete the skin and everything. The best decision to go with is to talk and discuss with the person copying you, and try to negotiate with them what happened and tell them to remove the instances where they copied. Forgive me if you did discuss with Samar and he refused to change what he did. Which does not seem to be the case for me.

4. Don't ever try to sue another forum for copyright unless they've gotten much bigger than you from using your ideas. The costs and time wasted for it would be much more than the worth.

Take those ideas into mind when something like this happens.

I would send a DMCA notice to the hosting service. Don't go to the forum owner and ask them to take it down first, go over their head and DMCA the host. Then get on your forum and tell the world about the clone forum so they lose reputation. 😀

Content thieves suck.

Just as this was resolved I was informed of somebody cloning our old v2 theme and releasing it on some warez site. This didn't have anything to do with Samar though.

This really makes me angry.. the time and effort I put into my themes for somebody to come along and steal my work....

Copying images and CSS code I guess, Not sure how people do the whole cloning thing.

They have scripts that will rip your theme.

How can we protect our custom styles or work from others? There seems to be more options of stealing then protecting.

If you have a custom style made for you, then put it on a disc, pay a small fee and copyright it with your country's copyright office, the fee shouldn't be that much most anywhere you do it.

Then if the forum/entity rips you off again, you have grounds to sue them and let the government go after them 🙂

So, today I woke up to this:

http://s11.zetaboards.com/Luigi_Forums/index/

It is EXACTLY the same as Mario Forums. Same theme, same banner (except mario is now luigi), even the same welcome message, word for word. He even stole the banner I use to advertise, except changed a word 'Mario' to 'Luigi'.

It's currently offline so I can't see the layout, but I bet it wil be th exact same as well.

Lol, that's pretty funny. You should contact zetaboards and let them know.

I don't find it that amusing, am I missing something?

Having your site copied is never funny but more often then not the copied site will fail and the person copying will soon give up. If they can't be bothered to come up with ideas themselves, they won't put much time and effort into running their clone.

If someone copies your site, they wont near become successfull and a clime forum must get boring after a while.

That happened to me when I was with Proboards. But in my case, it was a custom theme and I paid $75 dollars for it. I was using Photobucket to host some of the images and he did not even bother opening his own account, just using the same image links as mine (that's how I found out)! Luckily for me, they were a completely different subject from my board so they only copied the theme and layout but not all the text! Anyway, since I was in the process of moving to phpBB3, I did not even bother reporting the site. Now on phpBB3, my theme is link to my board subject so anyone copying the theme would need to also have a Sony Reader Board. 🙂

Edit to add: Since Proboards deleted my board a week later for TOS violation for moving, I went ahead and deleted ALL the images pertaining to the style from my Photobucket account!

This part makes me laugh '- 300+ posts daily!'

An total lie from the copier side.

On a serious note, report it to Zetaboards. People do it a lot and Zetaboards are quite good with sorting it.

I reported it to zetaboards, they said to politely ask them to remove it if they open, and send a support ticket if they refuse.

I'd almost bet money that they refuse, seeing as they have to know they've taken it from you and did it intentionally.
