I see it mostly online, but I've had a couple of friends in real life try to do it too. Usually, in real life, I'll change the subject.
Online, it's not always easy because some people are really good at manipulating others. Sometimes for those people, it's just best to put up a healthy boundary and stay away from them.
I generally find it frustrating to deal with. I've had both family and friends that have played the victim before. And sometimes one or two people I know would act like the victim repeatedly, just because they didn't understand something, and didn't want to take the time to deal with it appropriately.
It is subtle manipulation that is meant to gaslight the person at the receiving end of that. I am not vulnerable to anyone playing the victim card even when they are the ones wrong. I call their bluff straight up.
