Petya ransomware

Shipping giant Maersk is complaining about the Petya ransomware that hit Europe lately. The IT department of Maersk had admitted that their network fell pray to the ransomware and their business was greatly affected since their computer system was down for a few days. If what I read is right – that ransomware is only effective in old OS of Windows - then that means Maersk has not upgraded their computers.

Incorrect, the goldenEye/notPetya ransomware is mainly rampant on Windows 7 machines, however, it is reported that it does affect Windows 10 devices as well.

Also to note that those machines that are not updated on a regular basis are more vulnerable to this attack.
