Photoshop generally seemed to be the most used designing software. However, I've been seeing a lot of people moving over to Adobe Illustrator. If you've used both, which do you prefer? Why do you prefer that software over the other?

Both programs are different.

Photoshop is a "raster" graphics program which is meant for editing pixels directly. It's best for dealing with photos and other pre-existing graphics. It's also common for web design, because many web designers want precise control over each pixel individually, which is offered by a raster graphics editor such as PS. PS has the advantage of giving more control, although it also produces graphics that can't be scaled, and is probably more difficult to use as well.

Illustrator is a "vector" graphics program which is meant for creating new artwork. Art that is created using Illustrator can be scaled to any size easily, and is probably easier to create than graphics made using Photoshop. Illustrator is commonly used for logo design, and also used for other types of graphic design as well.

I prefer illustrator personally, as I prefer how the software works. You can use any product for just about anything, although Illustrator does not do a good job of editing pixels, and PS does not do a good job of editing vectors. I use both pretty regularly. PS for photos, avatars, and signatures, and AI for web design, UI design, and logos.

What a great explanation! I guess I never personally dived into Illustrator myself as I considered it learning a whole different software. 🙂 Photoshop is definitely great for editing photographs. I may have to give Illustrator a go and follow some tutorials in the near future.

I find Photoshop to be pretty complicated for designing graphics and art, I did try to get my hand around the tools when I used the program a while back, but I gave up after a while. The layer thing just confuses me. xD

I've used Illustrator and it's much easier to use, imo.

Yeah, Photoshop can be very difficult to use. Sometimes it's quicker for me to do pixel work in PS, and then export it into Illustrator to add text and such. That's what I did with my current signaturep. The Kirito and Saber images both had their background removed in PS, and were then superimposed on a sunset image in PS. Then I exported that into Illustrator, when I added the text and dropshadows.

I've never used Illustrator, but I am pretty proficient in Photoshop. I've also been using Photoshop for probably at least 10 years now. It's honestly the best graphic design program I've ever used. I've used it to make website templates, signatures, avatars, banners, logos, background images, wallpapers, icons, etc. I even edited my own senior pictures in high school haha.

Overall, PS is a phenomenal program that has never disappointed me. Speaking of PS, I need to start designing again. 😛

What version of PS do you use?

Honestly, I've always stayed true to Adobe Photoshop. I've used Illustrator in the past, but not enough to form any real opinion about it. I love Photoshop and since I've used it for over 10 years, I prefer it over any other graphic or Web design program out there.

I believe I have CS5.

Photo shop works mainly with raster graphics (a pixel-mesh where each pixel is assigned a color). Photo shop is used in many industries and for numerous purposes - photography, computer game graphics, user interface design, web design, science etc.It is my impression that Photo shop is required in many cases. Most people that mainly use other Adobe applications tend to have quite solid knowledge on Photo shop too, as it enables you to do a lot of things not possible in the other applications. A lot of content used in Flash, Dream weaver or In design might at first be made in Photo shop and later imported.

Illustrator is somewhat like Photoshop, as they both enable you to start from scratch and create something quite amazing. However they take a different approach as Illustrator is mainly vector-based graphics as opposed to Photoshop being mainly raster-based graphics. Vector graphics uses mathematical expressions to create the graphics, so it can be scaled indefinitely without losing quality. It is very useful for designing a logo that can go on a business card but also in a 7 meter wide version on the company head quarter.

This, pretty much.

You can't put a raster/bitmap software up against a vector software, they do different things.
