Hey all,

So what do you think about the Phpbb 3.1 release?

I think it has improved a lot such as having a built in notification system. However, I think there is still some space for improvement. For example, they should really add a built in wysiwyg editor like a lot of the paid forum software.

phpBB is a constant evolving system, so it goes without saying that there is room for improvement. For the foreseeable future, it's my professional forum software of choice (as it has been for the last 9 years).

All the best,
Cal 🙂

I think it still needs a ton of work and honestly feel like phpBB will always be years behind the competition, both free and paid.

Interesting assessment of the very forum software provider, which FP runs on! lol

Phpbb just reminds me of that old guy that tries to dress and act 30 years younger than he really is....I am just not impressed really.

.. likely that same "old guy" who earned his stripes, gaining experience and wisdom along the way!

Based on this review for 2014, it appears that phpBB, SMF and Vanilla float to the top of the charts!!

As someone who's used it since version 1 way back when, I can make such an assessment. No need to be a fanboy, the truth hurts, accept it The only reason any free forum is considered "top of the charts" is just that, because it's free. phpBB is free, uninspired, non-innovative and stuck in the past, no matter how you slice it.

responsive style has been added in 3.1
not even mybb 1.8.x has that (and also the notif system)
in 3.1 it jumps

In the days of extensions, I think the amount of built in features isn't important. It is now easy to add whatever you want with a few clicks in most popular softwares including phpBB 3.1.

phpBB 3.1 is a big step forward with a good new features but I think the transition from old style mods that modify core code to extensions is the biggest step forward and makes it easier to use for users who are used to Wordpress and other forum softwares. That alone I think has moved phpBB 3.1 much closer to being "current" and losing the "old" and outdated reputation it has picked up,
