phpBB. If you love it then I wouldn't recommend reading this. I am about to unleash my utter hatred for this forum software.

When I wasn't as good as I am now with forums I went with phpBB as a choice to try it out as I wasn't as satisfied with myBB back then. It was the worst experience I ever had and I don't think I stayed with it for long. The ACP was basic, old and similar to a maze. Finding things was hard and then trying to figure out how to do something with what you found is almost impossible. My first task was to install a credit system and I failed. I just gave up. I went on to install a theme and I failed. I gave up on that too. In the end I just couldn't work out how to use phpBB and I went back to myBB. And I'm glad I did. From that day on I have promised myself I will never touch phpBB again 😉

Interesting.. Well from the sounds of it just seems you gave up a bit to easily. PhpBB in itself is more advanced than other free software such as SMF, MyBB, etc since those are dumbed down and more simplied and more admin-friendly, but phpBB can be great once you get to understand how to use it.

If you are confused for basic functionality of the ACP they have a basic user guide for new users of phpBB right here. Also, if you still need help understanding how to install themes / mods I can gladly do my best to help you out.

I'm using phpBB right now. I agree it can be a pain in the neck sometimes, but I like it because I like the layout and how neat everything is laid out. Since this software is forever evolving there are things we may never understand, no matter how long you've been a webmaster. I don't think I'd use anything else if I didn't have to.

Phpbb 3.1 makes it a lot easier to install themes and addons but I have to say that their older versions are not very easy to use. I agree that there are better options out there though.
