PHPbb or MyBB

The last version of PhpBB that I would even recommend is 3.0.x and it no longer supported .

I'd suggest picking a forum software you like and then building a shop using WordPress & WooCommerce to bolt onto the forums.

phpBB is a good forum solution which I think does have the ability to link a WordPress system too but it depends on technical ability and what you're after.

There's lots of choice out there.

I go with IPB, But go on what feels the best option on yourself

Personally I like MyBB more but that's just me.

If you're not sure download a copy of xampp or wamp to set up a test server for yourself and try them both out. Download an older version (like MyBB 1.8.6 instead of 1.8.9), install them, make an account or two, make some gibberish posts, edit/report/delete those posts. Poke about in the ACP, install a few mods, mess with the templates, install a skin or at least try making a few changes to the CSS just to see what it looks like there, etc... Then try the upgrade process out.

This way you know roughly how it behaves when you'll be using it. It might take you an hour to play with each forum, but at least then you'll have a better appreciation for how each behaves and how to accomplish various things. I mean at the end of the day you're the one who's going to have to be comfortable using this software so take the time to try out options and see which you prefer before discovering in use that you don't like <behaviour>. At that point it might be a huge pain in the backend to change.

For a basic entry level sort of webmaster, I'd say phpBB 3.1 or 3.2. I say this as installing themes and extensions is easy and you literally upload to one folder whereas MyBB is a bit more complicated. But honestly, mess around with both and pick whatever suits YOU!

I'd recommend MyBB. Much simpler ACP, looks cleaner, despite having less support than phpBB3, it's still a very strong solution that could be used for any forum, professional or relaxed.

I also prefer MyBB. I find it easy, simple to use. Most forums that use it are fine and run great on it! The ACP, I really like, unlike some forum softwares, it's easy to get uses too.

MyBB allows users to use themes without having to modify code. They simply have an uploader.
