@Jason76 If you aren't on an budget get IPB 😛

It's a matter of personal taste, each to his own. But I really do see problems with vBulletin, but it could be that owners are simply not updating the software or using effective spam fighting techniques.

you are right an that is why I'm using IPB. There is one website that I know off that use IPB and I can tell you this that the owner doesn't bother updating it at all and it has so much errors and database error that I'm still shock that it's an active site

Actually, the spam, hacking, and design errors on so many websites are probably simply due to the owners not updating the software or screwing up in some other management issue. In fact, even smart people are sometimes terrible at spam prevention, like this math forum eaten up by spam.

I've only used xenforo, but I did not like it when I first saw it. The forum I work for use to be customizable for each user, but now everything just looks the same. I can't figure out if it's possible to reinstate a xenforo version of skins, which bothers me. We use to have about 30 skins that people could choose from with graphics and themes (there was even a megaman theme), but now everything is just black and dull. I'm still trying to like xenforo but idk.

Some dislike XenForo and many other forum software cause - unlike with ProBoards or ZetaBoards, you cannot change your own username (without admin help).

Proboards has only allowed admins to change their display name in the past. Usernames weren't changeable after registration, and the founder of each forum were forced to have "admin" as their username.

But @Jason76 is right. I don't know why more forum software don't implement the display name feature.
