phpBB or Xenforo

Thanks M8, I developed the Grooveshark player mod. The other mods are simple like youtube where we allow for the full url.

I'll get in touch with the XenForo team and and have them look at my board and see what they have to say.

Good thread here indeed.

I doubt very much if the phpBB MOD's are compatible with Xenforo, but they do have equivalents, many of which are free.

As for Youtube, Xenforo uses the shortened URL, but will do the hard work for you.

I would never go back to phpBB now, Xenforo is so much simpler, once you get used to the back end it gets even easier.

I am now the owner of a Xenforo license 😀

Good luck.

Use the Xenforo community, they are a very helpful bunch, there's always someone to help out, Brogan is a real wizard.

The admin panel is the hardest thing to use in the world. I seriously can't even find the place to add people's post count to their mini-profile >.<

Xenforo is trash just like vbulletin or phpbb3 or IPB 3.2

Create your own forum software like what I did, trust me... lol Alot faster and you can add w/e the hell you want.

Cheers

All the new forum softwares out now are BLOATED with absolute trash

I have used nearly all forum softwares and just between phpBB and XF, XF to me seemed like the Windows 7 whereas phpBB more like XP. I agree with almost everything karoshio said, besides the admin panel - I have used not only forum admin panels other admin panels as well and yes it is easy to learn regardless I felt like I wasn't completely in control.

For a startup forum, I'd suggest going with an opensource first and since XF has a great merge system, you can easily merge at a later point when you deem it necessary. Personally, I wouldn't take the risk of spending that much money without a certainty of the future.

Have you given thought to MyBB? It's a great piece of software - well at least when I used to use it.

That's the worst advice you can give, and I have made this mistake myself. Migrating forum scripts will LOSE you a lot of links, especially if you were using some rewrite rules. You'll have thousands of links that are no longer working and mess up your traffic and SEO FOR MONTHS maybe. I ran a MyBB for 5 years, since was too stupid not to use one of my VB licenses. Have migrated to VB 5 months ago. My traffic is 30% of what it used to be, have lost all good indexing etc.

CHOOSE A FORUM SCRIPT from the start and stick to it. Yes, PAY for a decent one and start as you should do. Any changes in the link structure will ruin your SEO and traffic so much it will hurt. A forum is an investment, if you can't do it well, maybe try other sites. Blogs for instance, wordpress is a free script

Not everybody has the ability or the time to create a forum software themselves to meet all their needs. 99.5% of people just want to use a software that they can download and install with minimal effort.

I have used phpBB, Xenforo and MyBB.

phpBB is far more complicated and hard to use than MyBB. Xenforo on the other hand has a different forum language altogether. Difficult to understand for the newbie.
Xenforo definitely has much potential than mybb or phpbb. however, it still needs few more updated releases to become more efficient.

at the moment, go with mybb.

Would you say starting out on PHPBB and moving to Xenforo with some success is a good idea? I'm on attempt number 4 having tried starting 3 forums in the past, but I really hope I can get this one moving with the lessons learned from the past ones...!
