Phpbb is a pretty decent software. I wouldn't say they are amazing but if you are looking for a free forum software, phpbb is a good choice. For the new Phpbb 3.1, they released their new addon systems called extensions and this is a lot more user friendly than their own system. Phpbb 3.1 is pretty good and I think the only major disadvantage is the lack of extensions. However their extension system is still new and I am sure there will be more extensions in the market in the future. A feature I really like is their Global Announcement that I don't see with many other softwares. Well, Mybb has this but you cannot reply to the topic so it isn't as good.
I didn't really think that there was much of a change from Phpbb 3.0 to 3.1 other than their mod system. I expected a bit more from them but at the end of the day, maybe my expectations is a bit high? Phpbb is definitely a good software and have all the features you need to run a successful forum but there are definitely better options out there. However, I can say Phpbb is one of the best free options for forum software.
