PhpBB vs SMF (any version)

First few mods & styles you'd install?

I haven't used SMF yet, just wondering what your experiences are versus the two softwares.

I would choose phpBB, the latest version(3.0.7, I think) and there are many good styles for the forum, Supernova is a good theme to use and you can find many more here
I don;t know many phpBB3 mods but the points mod is quite good and so is the rep mod.

Yeah, I like phpBB, though I've seen some very wicked smf boards that could rival the designs of some phpbb boards.

Peoples choice is based on what fits their needs and fits their abilities and knowledge. Alot of people that dislike phpBB are the people that can not install or don't want to try to install mods. Alot of people that choose SMF choose it because it has an easy to use system of adding mods. There is no better out of the two. I would choose phpBB3 anyday over SMF but again that is just my opinion based on my experience, what i want out of the software and my knowledge when it comes to installing mods.
