Hello. I don't really know which software is greater and better so which should i use? Or which do you use?

phpBB or SMF?

phpBB has much better support, and a wider range of Mod's and Themes, where as SMF has an easy install of Mod's.

I find that support part hard to be true. Many easy problems for SMF get solved in <10 hours. Some of the harder questions get solved in more time. I have never seen phpBBs support, but unless everything gets solved in less than an hour "much better" is really pushing it.

Also what MODs for phpBB do you not see on SMF?

The vast majority of SMF styles are tacky and look half complete, whilst phpBB offers a wide range of well made free styles and most actually look half decent. phpBB is also extremely easy to customise too.

As for support, never experienced SMF's support but I can say for sure that phpBB's is abysmal.

...and for everything else, search out the answer. This question has been asked hundreds of times.

It is easy to customize... but when it comes to installing modification for his/her forum... it's a pain... as for SMF, just upload it and done!

I find SMF better.

Easier to install mods, great support, and making mods for it isn't to hard.

Not to mention their themes are getting better. Espically for 2.0.

Asking a support question on the phpBB forums is like going through Airport security. You have to read the rules, search for any previous posts, use Google to search the site for any previous posts, re-read the rules, carefully use full English in your post, make sure it's not a snobbish question and wait 5 hours for a reply.

Wish I could help but I dislike both terrible. As far as mod installs and other stuff SMF is the way to go. Phpbb has lots of themes but every site as far as free forums goes has the same ones. The ACP on phpbb can be confusing at times as well. It depends on what you want, individual preference I guess.

Eh. I'll go with SMF. Atleast you can find some decent styles that don't all look the same. The majority of phpBB styles suck, they are basically all the same but with some different colours.

SMF mods are easy to install, unlike phpBB where you have to edit files which is a waste of time.

I have abit experince with smf, you can install mods two ways.

  • By uploading files and editing .php like phpbb
  • Also by uploading the files into the package downloader

Phpbb and SMF both alot easy customization also. So they are very similar...but they have different styles..

Ive ran both. I am more comfortable with phpbb3. It is confusing and inconvenient on the regular members side to update their signature, change their settings, etc. As they arent properly labled and easy to find like on other softwares. The Admin panel though is very easy to navigate and operate.

I have just tried SMF, and have taken back my words:

The themes, Dziner Studio make killer themes for SMF, they are definitely up to Web 2.0 standards, you should check them out.

As for SMF support, looking at both the phpBB MOD forum and the SMF MOD forum, the SMF one is way more active, I asked a question and was answered pretty much straight away, you can tell they value their users. Also I have found a lot of MOD's now that I had not found previously, so now I am swinging way over to SMF, it is a ton better!

I have all the paid Dziner Studio themes but now Ive got nothing to use them on.

They are awesome, right?

I dont have the paid ones, but even the free ones rule 😀
