phpBB4 is being created from scratch. We want to build a modern phpBB that integrates perfectly with the rest of your software stack. It is going to be built on top of the same popular PHP frameworks and libraries that many other projects use. This will improve interoperability with 3rd party software and make extending phpBB's feature set easier than ever. Useful generic components resulting from our work will be contributed back to those projects.

P.s im glad i purchased phpbb4themes.com 😛

Wow finally they are gonna get updated... Hopefully they make a new plugin installer.

They released phpBB 3.0.6 about a month ago, they even said that phpBB4 is coming in the future, but not for a very long time, phpBB2 was around for a few years.

If this does get released then I am proud to say I might stick into creating more PHPbb forums. Plus I haven't hear a PHPbb update in ages.
Hopefully this will be a success for them.

phpBB updated like 1 month ago to 3.0.6, have you been living under a rock? lol 😛

Wow! I won't do an actual forum, I don't think, but I would definetly like to do a test board with this when it's released to see what it's like. That'd be so nice if they could do like a plugin kind of thing like on MyBB. It would make it easier on those of us who have no knowledge of installing mods.

Let them make it like mybb

Well, not a total remake of MyBB, mind, it would still have to have great skins and stuff like that. But it should be made easier as far as installing mods and things, sort of like a plugin and play system like MyBB has, because I know when I was on advanced hosting, I had no knowledge of .zip files or whatever they were called. Next time I run a forum, and if this versions released, I would like to be able to make it be just myself and maybe one or two mods. I shouldn't have to have 3 tech admins doing all the dirty work. I would like to do some of it myself.

Damn, that's pretty cool actually! 🙂..Can't wait to see the outcome of that..And like everyone says..Hopefully they create a plugin this time.

Cool, maybe the will add standard ajax features and mod installations that dont require manual edits.

I reckon, they seriously need to keep up with the standards being set by the likes of SMF and MyBB in the free forum software industry.

You better have enough cash to renew it for around 7-12 years longer

Lol... agreed  They released phpBB 3.0.6 like a month ago, it will be at the very least 2
years till phpbb 4 even start to be worked on, I'd say 3 till released, maybe more!

They are working on 3.2 which is going to be a quite big release with alot of changes and new features. When that is getting towards release they will probably start thinking alot more about phpBB4 although at the moment this is the very early stages so it is obviously going to be a few years.

Only because you can't install mods with 1 click doesn't mean it isn't up with the standards of other free softwares. phpBB3 is very good. It may not be good for beginners but people with a bit of knowledge when it comes to coding and running forums, it is very very good. Even 1 click mod installations has it's downfalls.

I definitely agree with Fowler, I find phpBB to be way better then SMF and myBB even though they both have automatic mod installations. At the end of the day it comes down to user preferences and saying that phpBB isn't as good as MyBB or SMF is totally wrong, all the free software have it's ups and downs but it comes down to what you like and what you don't like.

I can't say phpBB is better then MyBB and SMF, or vica versa, but I can say I like phpBB much more then MyBB and SMF.
