phpBB4 in the works

I can't wait to see phpbb4! 😀 Then I might use it more than MyBB. 🙂

I'm eager to see how much of a change it will be from the current version, if they're designing it from scratch.

I definitely agree with Fowler, I find phpBB to be way better then SMF and myBB even though they both have automatic mod installations. At the end of the day it comes down to user preferences and saying that phpBB isn't as good as MyBB or SMF is totally wrong, all the free software have it's ups and downs but it comes down to what you like and what you don't like.

I can't say phpBB is better then MyBB and SMF, or vica versa, but I can say I like phpBB much more then MyBB and SMF.
I gotta disagree phpbb lacks behind in many areas.

It still lacks basic features.(I don't think i have to tell you them as it has been said already)

With each update it brings in changes that cause people to have to rewrite their mod or theme(not all the time though).

They also make mods hard to install. The manual install isn't the problem in my eyes, its what you have to edit that is.

For example lets compare an smf manual install to a phpbb manual install.

With smf all you gotta do is upload some files and add or remove a few lines of code.

With phpbb it is basically the same thing, but instead of maybe 7 line edits you have to edit 30 minutes worth.

Another area I myself find phpbb lacking is a simple to use acp. I know some people like it,but to a person just starting to make a forum it can be hard.

I myself don't mind it much, but as you can see all over this forum others hate it.

Then there is one other problem I myself find troubling. It is all the mods still in beta and not final.

I know mybb and smf have a few aswell.

However phpbb has so many that should be done by now.

Thats about all I can think of right now.

I do hope phpbb4 does good though.

It may seem funny buying a domain so early but thats the way to do it 🙂
Buy it early and then sell it when its at demand think about it

say phpbb4 releases in 8years = 80$ reg fees

1000s of searches for ' phpbb4 themes' exact match = winner

Can sell the domain , sell advertising space and more. 🙂

It wasn't a comment to agree/disagree too, it was my opinion on phpBB, that's why I said it comes down to user preference.

Can't wait for it! I hope they make mods easier to install...

That is good to hear! Because there is a lot of great mods that people probably want to install but can't because of the difficulty!

I believe they are making some changes for phpBB 3.1 to make it easier to install mods.

I don't know for sure. There has been alot of things mentioned by alot of people and i am not completely sure what is and what isn't being done.

phpBB4 isn't going to be out for years to come, phpBB 3.0.8 will probably be released next, then phpBB 3.1 and then a few releases after that will be made till phpBB4. But it's going to be a lot more user friendly though, with many more features but I hope installing MODs is still required which allows for customization.

I hope it updates itself to commercial forum software with AJAX features and a more slick interface

phpBB will never convert to being paid software, even if it did though they would still have to allow the community to keep their current release of software as free and under the GPL license. But it's been said by many, many phpBB staff members that it never will.

Well, I'm sure it won't take 5+ years for phpBB 4 to some out. Even they've realized that the only way to compete with not just the other free guys, but the commercial guys as well, is to work on being more progressive and integrating it with the latest technologies. After all, you're not going to be on a flat-file Perl forum forever, nor will you be with PHP/MySQL/(x)HTML.
