I've always looked to phpBB for a source of efficient programming for CMS and good database strucutre, and I'm kind of excited to see what they are going to do with phpBB4. I'm imagining that they are going to make use of AJAX, and have everything run with such newer standards.

I am curious as to whether or not they plan to change the front end at all graphically. I think it'd be nice but that's just me cause I don't care for how the software is right now :/

That's what I'm saying. I hope they implement AJAX on the UI, as most internet browsers now have full support for it. Similar to what Xenforo does with the UI, I guess.

I've used PhpBB 2 and 3, but the biggest wonder is when 4 is going to come out, I've never used Phpbb too much, tbh. I prefer freeforums better, but that's just my opinion. I think you should use FreeForums, its easy to use, and its basically PHPBB and it's free. I love it, it also has a use for AJAX if there are a lot of members, but that pretty much cancels it all out if you have a general chat thread, so I actually might change it to lure users into getting more posts on the forum, plus having a General Chat Thread is more fun.

FreeForums is phpBB3 (albeit modified) so you are using phpBB more often then you think 😉

You're right. 😉 (See you're hiding there, sorry I had to point that out xP) Anyway, I disabled AJAX chat on my forum do to it's inactivity and how worthless chat is on a forum.

While I've always liked the layout of phpBB, I almost wish that with 4.0 that they would make the layout a little more professional looking. Some sites some things just look way too cramped and cluttered. So maby if they thought of ways to make it a bit more nicer looking, then it would be a lot better.

From my understanding, it looks like they are looking to make phpBB more forum owner friendly. You know, make it easy to use even for first time forum owners. I know this because my tech admin and I were talking about this, and he said if they ever did go that route, he said it would be boring because your work load would be cut in half as far as installing mods and themes and stuff.

With a plugin kind of system (like mybb) would make mod installation alot faster. One problem is though that it will allow people to run a forum with not much knowledge so when there is a problem they will not know how to solve it. Plugin systems are not perfect and can cause issues. With phpBB how it is now, it requires people to manually edit the code to add mods and it does give the user a bit of an insight on how the forum works and users can learn some basic php knowledge for example. If you make things so simple, users are not encouraged to look at the code and try to understand it. That means they won't learn as much. If a plugin causes an error then they will probably be quite stuck not knowing what the plugin had done or how to fix it.

So basically :decline: of phpbb, they're streamlining it for the unwashed masses.

I completely agree with you although you must also consider that from what I am only guessing forum software developers will always strive for a more user/noob friendly software to expand as much as possible.

If someone new to the software world reads some reviews 'n' such and reads how easy mod installation and things are for one and not for another they aren't going to go for the one that's harder to use, unless of course the rare cases where the person wants to learn and challenge them self.

I think there new plugin system should be like wordpress.
That is a ton easier 😛

I can see where this confusion would come in to be honest. Because I know like on MyBB, for example, one wrong move with installing a plugin, without making backups I might add, and you're screwed. Especially if you're on a host where you can't obtain backups on your own.

I'll be interested in seeing what they manage to create however, I am not necessarily sure that I want to use phpBB ever again.

I haven't seen such a problem with MyBB plugin installation anytime.

And back to topic. I hope phpBB4 would have major changes to adopt them to new standards in Forum world.

I detest phpbb in general. It never looks nice and neat.
You do realize you're using it now while posting here, right? 😛

While i don't 'detest' phpBB, i'm not a fan of it but I have my reasons.

I absolutely can't wait till they release phpBB4. I will be upgrading immediately!

I know my tech-admin is not looking forward to this phase at all where phpBB will come out like MyBB. He enjoys installing mods and themes, and I think he likes the manual way of installing stuff because it's challenging and you really got to watch what you're doing. I'm sure it'll be hard on PH as well, because if I recall correctly, they have a service where you pay a fee and they help you install what you want or need. So with that in mind, unless they get a bunch of support tickets for having problems like something isn't right with a mod they're trying to install, it'll be boring for them, because as I said, they like doing things manually because you really have to watch what you're doing, and it's the thought of a challenge that these guys like. I have a feeling that if this is implemented, they might drop the mod installation service and just probably be on standby if a forum gets hacked or if someone is unsure of how to do something or other.

The main thing I really want is a way to install mods quicker. I know I would rather work on the things that need to be done than install optional mods. You now, have a pretty big margin to mess up in and if something goes wrong, the forum can go down. While if you have a forum with a few people posting, it wouldnt really matter, but it could really effect the bigger forums as people don't like down time.

And ashley, in your concern about your host, I'm sure they wouldn't quit doing it just because it got easier, there are many places that offer mybb plugins for a service.
