Yes, I think plain and ugly website templates can earn you more money after I switch my blog template to a plain easy to read template rather then a fancy looking template with plenty of widgets. I notice my earnings increased slightly from before.

I also tend to hit the back button when I feel a site is too high class, and sells or write about stuff I can't afford or the articles don't seem very relate able to me.

This is one of the reasons I like shopping and browsing at websites which look like eBay, Amazon, Walmart and Craigslist. They don't look very attractive, but I usually can guest the price of most of the items by looking at the website template.

I doubt it has anything to do with the template. It all comes down to how much activity you get and how much the users are tempted to stay on your website/forum.

As a webmaster i think they should a happy middle. To plain sites are boring and fancy just shows people dont care about user ability.

It depends. If a website just looks nice and doesn't use lots of flash/hq images that take ages to load it'll make the same as or just as much as a plain website with the same content. However if you have a flash website etc it's bloody annoying.

It is kind of strange that plain websites like Wikipedia, plentyoffish.com, and Craigslist which I read make millions even though the designs are very simplistic, and not attractive. But, offer a lot of fresh content and value to the reader, but can be kind of unattractive or hard to read in some cases.

i think it depends on just how basic it is, i think basic is good for certain websites like government website but for an online fireworks shop (weird example, i know) you might want something a little more fancy 🙂

Indeed, I want simple website design when I'm using Dictionary.com and fancy web design when I'm looking to buy a paid premium template for my website, blog, or forum.
